I’m far from the first person to observe this, but we are definitely in a different stage of capitalism than our grandparents now that the ruling class has stopped making even hollow promises of a life of leisure for the rest of us. “Nope, you’ll just continue to toil under deteriorating conditions while we steal the value created by any new technology, because what are you gonna do about it?” It’s morbidly funny that they gave up the game so completely over a technology that’s so unlikely to actually create any value. Anyway, here’s hoping that I live to see them get no more and no less than what they deserve, so I can repurpose these wristwatches.

@earthshine@masto.hackers.town @tomasino@tilde.zone I agree that Primer is a different “type” than 12 Monkeys. “Groundhog Day” is absolutely a prototype for a distinct category of time travel film.

I think I’m just dealing with the realization that the TTRPG GMing I’ve been doing in public lately is getting dangerously close to “community theater.”

@afreytes@mastodon.gamedev.place At some point, not even very long ago, I started looking up words when I wasn’t sure what they meant. There are probably thousands of English words that I’ve heard or read, and kinda know what they mean from context, but couldn’t define for someone else if they asked me to. So I finally started chipping away at these. This project will take the rest of my life but I find it quite satisfying. So I heartily endorse “looking up words.”

I love movies and records, don’t get me wrong! And I understand the logic of capital — it’s cheaper and helps cement their power if they make and distribute recorded entertainment to the masses versus giving us the leisure time to entertain ourselves. But if I survive a civilization collapse, I have no concerns about getting entertained.

@foone@digipres.club This is delightful, but the moire pattern in the photograph of the Progressive Pride flag is tugging insistently at the most nostalgic centers of my brain.

@graydon@types.pl One way to think of it (that just occurred to me now but has probably been written about before by others): currencies, calendars, and clocks are among the most powerful tools that empires have used to impose order on their subjects.

What is cool is the ability to specify and update the amount of trust I have in a peer to a fine grain. But “I have zero trust in everyone” is as wrong-headed as any other liberal scheme. gtfo with that bullshit

“Wait, what’s wrong with calendars?” Don’t get me wrong; paying attention to where you are within the solar cycle makes a ton sense. Measures like “about one quarter-moon before the spring equinox” probably provide all the precision you need if you want to do agriculture or forage effectively. But this “Monday March ninth” shit is for the bosses.

@rek I know that Arthur is probably holding semaphore flags but I'm going to vote for them because I can pretend they're whatever I want.

@afreytes@mastodon.gamedev.place I wouldn’t say that I’m SURPRISED but I think it’s cool as hell. Dictionary Club! (All bilingual people impress the hell out of me. I’be been working on my Spanish forever and it’s... slow going.)

@yaxu@post.lurk.org Most complaints about Fediverse reply culture carry at least a little bit of the vibe: “Ew, all these weird nerds talk to me like they’re my EQUALS, gross.”

@hannah@social.hd-dn.com I love this story!
