I'm a computer nerd. I write software (some of it FOSS), I'm working on a game (also FOSS), and I sometimes make music.

@rfc1036@hostux.social I'm sorry you're being attacked by a trolling campaign orchestrated by fascists, I 100% believe you and that's terrible. However, as someone who's decidedly not a fascist, I'm not thrilled either about systemd implementing features intended to enable age verification (which is what the DoB field is). If you don't want the field to be associated with age verification, maybe don't introduce it as: "Stores the user's birth date for age verification, as required by recent laws".

I wrote a blog post about various annoyances I have with SQLite's defaults, and a suggestion about how it could be fixed: https://mort.coffee/home/sqlite-editions/ TL;DR: SQLite should have a Rust-style edition system which lets us set a whole suite of more sensible defaults with a single 'PRAGMA edition = 2026'. #sqlite #databases #rdbms #embedded

@shac@ioc.exchange This is a fine enough definition of memory safe, but not the one in common use. People typically consider the likes of Java, Python, Go and JavaScript to be memory safe, even though they all have variations of null pointer dereference exceptions and use after free exceptions (e.g exceptions due to writing to a closed stream). It's generally considered "memory safe" because the result is a controlled crash rather than "undefined behavior" where anything can (and will) happen.

@digitalraven I bought a used EPYC CPU + supermicro motherboard + 512GB RM combo å bit over å year ago for ~$1500. The same combo today? Capped to 128GB RAM, at $2500. 1/4 the RAM at 1.7x the price for one year older hardware. Oh and the hard drives we put in the server? Over 2x the price for the same capacity. The SSDs too. It's so bad.

@kelset@mastodon.online From what I can tell, VS Code doesn't really have a "terms of service" you have to accept, it has a software license and a privacy policy. I took a quick glance at both and couldn't find anything obvious related to age, and I'd be surprised if a license or privacy policy had that. The weird thing Zed is doing is that they have a ToS for a *service*, but require you to agree that ToS to download their *software*. Combined with unfortunate wording, you have the 18+ requirement to use Zed.

@marcoarment I looked at the image before I completed reading your post. My immediate read on the UI was that clicking the blue "listening mode" button turns it to "off" (you know, like how clicking the blue Bluetooth or WiFi button in THE SAME UI turns Bluetooth or WiFi off). I was wondering what's so difficult about it. This is remarkably bad.

@niccolove Oh, never mind. The framework team said (https://community.frame.work/t/framework-supporting-far-right-racists/75986/2) "We’ve sent out large quantities of hardware to folks at Fedora, Bluefin, Bazzite, NixOS, Arch Linux, Linux Mint, Omarchy, and many other distros" That more or less counts as financial support in my book. If your contention is "they only sent large quantities of computer hardware to Omarchy, they didn't financially support them", I think you're being too petty.

Framework supporting far-right racists?

We support open source software (and hardware), and partner with developers and maintainers across the ecosystem. We deliberately create a big tent, because we want open source software to win. We don’t partner based on individuals’ or organizations’ beliefs, values, or political stances outside of their alignment with us on increasing the adoption of open source software. We’ve sent out large quantities of hardware to folks at Fedora, Bluefin, Bazzite, NixOS, Arch Linux, Linux Mint, Omarchy,

@niccolove Is your contention that they didn't financially support Omarchy, they just endorsed Omarchy again and again and doubled down when they received push-back? Or are you arguing that supporting Omarchy (which is unequivocally DHH's project) is not the same as supporting DHH himself? Or are you making the point that DHH is not a neo nazi, he's some different kind of fascist? Or am I missing something here?

@kelset@mastodon.online The reasonable way to handle an optional service bundled with a piece of software would be to have a license for the software and a ToS for the service and only require you to agree to the ToS if you use the service. I would guess that this is what VS Code is doing if you use Copilot. Maybe their ToS for Copilot even requires you to be 18+ (I haven't checked). They just had the sense to not shove the Copilot ToS in your face just to download the editor

@marekfort@mastodon.online @amberage@eldritch.cafe @kelset@mastodon.online But the e-mail better reflects the wording of the ToS:

By agreeing to these Terms, Customer represents and warrants to Zed that: (a) Customer is at least 18 years old

"these Terms" are the terms you have to agree to in order to download the editor. It's in the section of the ToS pertaining to the Service, but I can't find a way to read it that doesn't affect the whole ToS.
