mastodon 4.7.2+glitchVintage computer arts collective, c. 1994-1998... and now, today. ANSI, ASCII, teletext, hirez, tracking, coding and lit. ++NO CARRIER
Mistodon: back in 2022 Tapio drew this #ANSIart (ish) illustration of the scene in J.R.R. Tolkien's #FellowshipOfTheRing where #Gandalf faces off against the #Balrog in the Mines of Moria. We shared it in last month's new books-themed MIST0426 artpack collection.
Mistodon: #cherryblossom season is sweeping through Japan, so what better time to share this #textart screen, drawn by @littlebitspace@mas.to, celebrating a seasonal #tea service in the shadow of #Fujisan. It was included in the recent unthemed MIST0226 artpack collection.
Mistodon: There's a beautiful spring day going on outside so today we're going to share this butterfly riot (I was confident I had a hapax legomenon there but surprisingly no!) drawn in monochrome #ASCIIart by Mozz. It was included in the recent unthemed MIST0226 artpack, and if we'd been right-thinking it would have been the FILE_ID.DIZ for that collection!
Mistodon: this #PETSCII illustration, "Jouer le rôle" (play the role), is unmistakably from the desk of @littlebitspace@mas.to , featuring a skeletal marionette dangling at rest between two artist's mannequins. It was included in the new unthemed MIST0226 artpack collection.
Mistodon: this animated #BBCMicro high resolution graphics screen of #Yoda using The Force to levitate Luke Skywalker's #XWing out of the #Dagobah swamp in the #EmpireStrikesBack was drawn by @pixelblip@techhub.social and included in the science fiction-themed MIST0524 artpack collection released two years ago. #MayThe4thBeWithYou
Mistodon: this #ANSIart screen by AdeptApril is the first file to appear, alphabetically, in the new books-themed MIST0426 artpack, so it is also the first individual work from that collection that we will profile. On request from Zeromous, it is an adaptation of the front cover to #CliffordStoll's 1989 hacker bestseller #TheCuckoosEgg .
Mistodon: this spooky, Ringu-esque #ANSIart promo for #DeadModemSociety BBS was drawn by Zeus II and included in last month's unthemed new MIST0226 artpack collection.
Mistodon: this #ASCIIart interpretation of the cover art to #MarkZDanielewski's 2000 novel #HouseOfLeaves was drawn by Moth. This piece was included in last month's new books-themed MIST0426 artpack collection.
Mistodon: here's a more in-depth look at some of the #ASCIIart styles represented in the new MIST0226 artpack collection, including works natural and fantastic, representative and typographical.
Mistodon: this #ANSIart personification of an IRC URL-previewing bot, navi, was drawn by Picrotoxin and included in the recent unthemed MIST0226 artpack collection. Beep boop!
Mistodon: while its focus is on adaptations of book cover art, the new literary MIST0426 artpack collection also features portraits of some of our favorite writers. Here's #PhilipKDick done in #teletext by @atonalosprey@oldbytes.space , with an Easter egg book name hiding in plain sight!
Mistigram: the new MIST0426 artpack collection just dropped, a varied visual celebration of books and literature!
Thanks to The War On Xmas for the FILE_ID.DIZ artwork, a #blockASCII adaptation of #SimonAndSchuster's logo.
Mistodon: Happy #Easter! This #ANSIart portrait of #JesusChrist, titled Love is Vulnerability, was drawn by @mavenmob@oldbytes.space, winning 1st place in the @flashparty@mastodon.online 2025 demoparty's extended text art compo. It was also included in the recent unthemed MIST0226 artpack collection.
Mistodon: one of the first #ANSIart screens Cthulu started when the idea of doing a books-themed artpack came up (and also, after quite some turbulance, the very last one he finished), this adaptation of the typographical cover design to the 1999 Mariner Press edition of #JoseSaramago's #Blindness was included in last month's new literary MIST0426 artpack collection. (The artist thanks Yvonne for lending her copy so many years ago!)
Mistodon: if you ever wondered just what @axb@universeodon.com stood for, it's truth, justice, and ... oh wait, never mind, it's initials for Axel Barebones. And here the man is to remind us in #ASCIIart himself! This piece was included in the recent unthemed MIST0226 artpack collection.
Mistodon: the new literature-themed MIST0426 artpack collection was inspired by the work of Dosdoc, but he was unavailable to join us on this occasion, up to his neck raising a new child. In honour of this tot, we made an effort to recognise and celebrate some of our favorite children's books. You can enjoy browsing the pack at 16colo.rs or if you prefer you can download it for local access via mistigris.org
Mistodon: are we still at war? (Were we ever?) I have no idea, but here's a classic 1942 propaganda piece, #SomeoneTalked by #FrederickSiebel (who went on to invent Mr. Clean), drawn in #ASCIIart by @mozz. It was included in the recent unthemed MIST0226 artpack collection.
Mistodon: This #teletext portrait of #AlecGuinness as #ObiWanKenobi was drawn by @horsenburger and included in the science fiction-themed MIST0523 artpack collection released three years ago. #MayThe4thBeWithYou
Mistodon: a very merry unbirthday to you! While we're still in a nonsensical #AprilFools mentality, here's an exceedingly foolish scene of #AliceInWonderland's #MadHatterTeaParty, drawn in #ShiftJIS by Kalcha. It was included in the MIST0117 artpack collection released nine years ago!
Mistodon: April is #poetrymonth (the cruellest month!), so fittingly we have paid tribute this month to many celebrated poems and poets in the new, literature-themed MIST0426 artpack collection! You can check it out at 16colo.rs or download it for local enjoyment via mistigris.org
Mistodon: with the exception of a few pieces of computer music, nearly everything in the new, unthemed MIST0226 artpack collection that dropped last night is some form or another of #textart and #textmode art -- here is a sampling of specimens of #ASCIIart, #ANSIart, #ATASCII, #PETSCII and #ShiftJIS contained therein.
Mistodon: Late last night, we dropped our first artpack collection of 2026, MIST0226, an unthemed survey of work our artists had just been making on their own without our directing them to travel in the same direction. You can browse it at @16colors. (DIZ by CoaXCable.)
Mistodon: LDA continued his campaign of drawing #ANSIart tributes to his Mistigris colleagues here in this celebration of @consolejockey@mastodon.social , whose program we use to syndicate these Mistigram posts across several microblogging services. (The mutual appreciation society continued below, where ConsoleJockey drew a reciprocal tribute to LDA! But we only have so much screen space to work with here, so stay tuned.) This piece was included in the recent unthemed MIST0226 artpack collection.
Mistodon: One final silly April Fool's screen, mashing up a little #Easter into the heady mix, this #AcornElectron high resolution graphics screen was drawn by The Elk and included in the MIST0418 artpack collection released 8 years ago this month.
