Look under your tree! 🌲 🎁

There's a major #rstats #rdatatable release waiting! @r_data_table@fosstodon.org

A tremendous thanks to all involved and especially those contributing to some major (performance-maintaining!!) rewrites around the non-API issue.

Thanks also to the CRAN team and Luke for their patience+working with us to get it over the line.

Happy Thanksgiving, and happy {lintr} release day :) #rstats

Lots, as usual:
* native pipe enforcement by default
* encourage %||%
* discourage if (all.equal(...))
* exclude by glob in .lintr
* loads of robustness fixes

Thanks as ever for all contributions!

I took over as maintainer for {patrick} -- a {testthat} extension for running parameterized tests. we have a patch release adapting to {testthat} 3.3.0. h/t Hadley for the proactive fix! #rstats

TIL .Last() won't run in a non-interactive #rstats session that exits with error:

Rscript -e ".Last = \() cat('run\n'); stop('oops')"

Gemini suggested a kludgy workaround but I can't think of anything else, maybe something with options(error=...)?

Rscript -e "run_last = TRUE; reg.finalizer(.GlobalEnv, \(e) if (run_last) cat('run\n'), onexit=TRUE); stop('oops')"

My requirements are that it should (1) work in both interactive and batch sessions (2) optionally be disabled

if (!.on_cran()) {
cat("Starting tests for 'xxx' package ...")
test_check("xxx")
} else {
cat("Skipping tests on CRAN.")
}

you hate to see it 😓

A fun one -- writing a CI script for a package only requiring R 3.4, whose test suite is written in testthat (requires R 4.1)

shims away!

https://github.com/r-lib/bit64/pull/196

GitHub

Remove CI from 3.6.0, add one for 3.4.0 instead by MichaelChirico · Pull Request #196 · r-lib/bit64

The {testthat} suite now requires fairly recent R, so using the default suite on ancient R won't really work. Instead, I've employed Gemini to fix up & extend the existing .devcontainer...

@mhoye 8/5 is way more practically useful imo b/c of base 10. for Fibonacci you either need to have a boatload of numbers memorized (to divide by the appropriate power of 10) or only be talking about very specific comparisons.

Replying to
@ryanmcshane@fosstodon.org that said if you're really keen on fine-tuning that one, there are a decent number of bugs in the tracker, it might be possible to learn how it works by tinkering around trying to fix some of them 🤓

My toolchain got borked at somepoint, I'm surprised nobody else appears to have gotten into this state...

But for the void:

---
readelf: Warning: Unrecognized form: 0x23
readelf: Warning: DIE at offset 0x3c43 refers to abbreviation number 479 which does not exist
---

Dump in my install logs finally fixed by '-gdwarf-4' in my Makevars:

---
CFLAGS+=-gdwarf-4
CXXFLAGS+=-I/usr/include -gdwarf-4
CXX17FLAGS+=-std=c++17 -gdwarf-4
---

(h/t gemini for the band-aid fix until I upgrade ubuntu...)

Replying to
@ryanmcshane@fosstodon.org @yume@mi.yumechi.jp you may be interested in learning some lintr -- it's much easier (IMO) to do static analysis with XPath than directly with the getParseData() output
