Not a fixed effect, or a random effect, but a secret third thing.
More good news of the day! Our paper “Much Ado About Gender: Current Practices and Future Recommendations for Appropriate Gender-Aware Information Access”, led by undergrad Christine Pinney with myself, Ph.D candidate Amifa Raj, and @alex@dair-community.social, has been accepted as a full paper to #CHIIR2023. Preprint coming (maybe after the winter break), abstract is here: https://md.ekstrandom.net/pubs/chiir-gender
This by @charliejane@wandering.shop is about fiction but also seems applicable to research writing. https://buttondown.email/charliejane/archive/what-the-original-star-wars-teaches-us-about/
@Quinnae_Moon@wandering.shop @benjotron@mspsocial.net @Tarbh@mastodon.ie @shriramk@mastodon.social @BenAveling@mastodon.au @a@pdx.social discoverability is another huge diff — a QT allows author & readers to see who QTed.
@lowd@sigmoid.social @jfpuget@sigmoid.social “copyright images cannot be used without consent from copyright holder” is not true as stated. US copyright law gives a specific set of exclusive rights, and “use” isn’t one of them. The linked resource primarily covers use that involves distributing the original in some form. Fair use & use not covered by law are legal.
This isn’t to defend the models, just that both legality & ethics are subtle. IANAL but have advanced lay knowledge of copyright.
Slinging baseless allegations around isn't going to help solve the murders in any way whatsoever. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/idaho-professor-sues-tiktoker-allegations-killing-4-university-student-rcna63149
@mikarv@someone.elses.computer IMO replies and QTs have very different meanings and uses.
A QT is a clear “share with commentary”, which is valuable when sharing info across communities or domains. E.g. explaining why a post on fiction writing has valuable info for academics.
@jenn@sigmoid.social the 3 big things I think there are to think about in host selection:
- what are the moderation policies (both formal and in-practice)?
- what's the local timeline like (is it useful for discovering things relevant to you)?
- who runs it and do they have sufficient resources and expertise for security updates, continuity of service, etc.?
answering (3) is hard. My personal account is on a host w/ lots of experience, but in practice the server is super slow to propagate content.
@devezer@mastodon.social I did not get a lot of books read this year, but did greatly enjoy The Wind's Twelve Quarters (Ursula K. Le Guin).
@jiahao@mastodon.social I've been really happy with the reliability & durability on my TravelPro luggage. Looks like they have some business-line stuff with laptop pockets, e.g. https://travelpro.com/collections/carry-on-luggage/products/platinum%C2%AE-elite-20-expandable-business-plus-carry-on-spinner
