Dunno, but this new security situation makes me think we can’t actually put the genie back in the bottle.

Once #LLM s have to be deeply involved in the pipeline, as suggested by this article ( and arguably common sense in a fight fire with fire way), that seems like a seed from which it will permanently grow into the whole computing world (of it hasn’t already).

Productivity tech bros are one thing. But the fight over security is another (right?). And cementing a position as the industry standard there feels like the first part of the hype curve settling in something that will stick.

It’s a stark image: wrangling all of this LLM output because if you don’t someone else will and use it against you. Honestly made start to ask the simple question … do I want computers in my life anymore, or, especially, the internet. If the Internet is the digital realm, I’m naturally out of my league as an organic. The more dominated it is by #AI / #LLM s , the less safe, comfortable and desirable it has to be for me, surely.

@carnage4life@mas.to DONT want to be rude … but that’s the problem right? Like not just losing your job and having your profession shrink (though it’s ironic that the “automate everyone’s job away” profession automated themselves first) … But, what’s left of this world for us in an AI future? Is it our world? Do we have any means as average people to ensure any kind of sovereignty and fairness? What does a good healthy human society even look like, and what kinds of technological advancement fits with that? Do we have alternatives ways to progress? Big important questions, no? Which no one or few are openly talking about! In the end, our love of novelty, of having something else do work for us, and our adaptability to the point of moving toward unhealthy behaviours … all seem unsuited to this moment.

@riley @atomicpoet I don't want to dump on mastodon at all here, but calckey is what I imagined the fediverse microblogging platforms to be like before I checked them/mastodon out. It's what you'd expect from OSS social media, right? Features, options, hackability, and fun. Again, not to be critical, but mastodon feels like it's coming from a different place.

@lynnesbian@fedi.lynnesbian.space Having lived without the character limits (not this instance but elsewhere) ... yea ... they're clearly dumb IMO and I'm ready for any spicy take that they're destroying our brains and discourse.

@jonny@neuromatch.social I worry about what's on the other side and whether a crash can be slow and long enough to kinda "fail upward". Like, ~decade is long enough for acolyte-juniors to become managers/execs.

@nicuveo@tech.lgbt it’s interesting to contrast this with the lemmy/kbin crowd who are rather determined to ensure their platform is searchable. They want it to become a permanent repository of information. Just the other day people were asking the devs about how to improve SEO for the platform. My take is that mastodon is an awkward middle ground between private group chat and social media and that some form of “public square(s)” isn’t actually a bad idea and masto isn’t the place for it.

@elduvelle@neuromatch.social @nicuveo@tech.lgbt saving stuff makes sense, but in the end it’ll be done with software, right, and for many hosted non-locally? So why not use the FOSS software that is our social media? I say this because I suspect it might be healthy for the professional quarters of masto (eg academia et al) to openly acknowledge if/how masto isn’t the platform they need. Because there are others and can be new ones too. Lemmy/kbin for instance are completely searchable.

@jeremy_list@hachyderm.io @lynnesbian@fedi.lynnesbian.space I’ve been on a number instances/platforms now with limits ranging from 4,000-15,000, and AFAICT it’s basically never a problem. So long as the UI has an “expand” option for longer content, nothing is lost.

@elduvelle@neuromatch.social @nicuveo@tech.lgbt oh sorry, FOSS=free open source software, eg fosstodon.org. Different servers for different needs makes a lot of sense (especially as a user of neuromatch), but I feel masto forks are not as successful as one would hope. Which I chalk up to the fact that it’s just more complexity for the user in addition to choosing an instance, and admins too. Instead, I think an alternative platform that’s obvious to users etc might be better, if it can “break through”.

@nicuveo@tech.lgbt oh yea, masto is great if want masto, and there are plenty of reasons for people to want that, no doubt! Though the issues some have had with safety taints the idea that suburban quietude is a good idea for social media … maybe private group chats would be good? But it’s not Twitter and it’s not the social media many both here and not would want, yet by size it is basically the fediverse. Moving on from masto dominance may be valuable/important for the Fedi at large IMO.

@jonny@neuromatch.social @elduvelle@neuromatch.social @nicuveo@tech.lgbt I said it elsewhere in the thread ... while I completely agree with you, for the user, whether coming as a professional or not, at some point chaos and choice become noise while some sort of branding that helps guide user choices becomes valuable, in my vague impression (IMVI?)
