vision 2 / basement workshop ,drawn by clifford harper , radical technology (1976)
designed for the basic maintenance of a large urban house with up to 20 occupants . this example includes facilities for clothes making and shoe repair , pottery , household decoration and repair , and poster making . the equipment could all run on low supplies of energy except the kiln , although the scene is imagined as a basement , it could easily be the center house workshop of vision 4

vision 4 / autonomous terrace , drawn by clifford harper , radical technology (1976)
the scheme is described in detail on pages 166-7 , it's not so much autonomous as it is communal space reorganized to become workshops , bakery and sauna , launderette , coffee shop . gas electric & water supplied from the mains , but the community treats its own sewage .

vision 3 / autonomous housing estate , drawn by clifford harper , radical technology (1976)
intended for rural or semi rural areas , these dwellings would be independent of grid services . some services (waste treatment , some food , space and water heating) would be provided at the household level , others (electricity , water , cooking gas & some food) at the community level , where economies of scale make shared facilities cheaper .

"Lichens mine minerals from rock in a twofold process known as weathering . first they physically break up surfaces by the force of their growth. second, they deploy an arsenal of powerful acids and mineral-binding compounds to dissolve and digest the rock
when lichens die and decompose they give rise to the first soils in a new ecosystem
lichens are how the inanimate mineral mass w/in rocks is able to cross over into the metabolic cycles of the living

"from kittens to fireflies to weeds,
into the sea and back again, the viruses wander without aim,
snipping off a piece of heredity here, depositing it there,
exchanging the code of life like bits of gossip
passed over a backyard fence ..
viruses are the worst gossips in the world."

charles pellegrino , from their book chronic fatigue syndrome (as quoted in stephen buhner's book, herbs for hepatitis c and the liver, p. 105)
