sometimes people like to try to figure out our toots in the context of some news or post that's going around fedi; and i just need to disclaim that i am so chronically out of the loop these days that i likely have no idea of whatever temporaneous thing you might think i'm referencing

this doesn't mean you can't come to conclusions, and then subsequently decide you've seen enough evidence that it's a waste of your time to keep engaging in discussions with most folks around you (about that topic) this doesn't mean you have to give ground to concern trolls or people who spend time sea lioning but there are still lots of situations where people really should allow themselves to hang on to uncertainty, rather than just trying to figure out which piece of their internalized rhetoric defines what they should be absolutely sure of in a given situation

@swetland@chaos.social there are lots of valid arguments against AI code that can be made (e.g. using banks of GPUs to generate your little program is a huge hit to the environment for little output) that don't happen also to encourage the technical elitism that's stained our industry when people tell me that AI writes code like a junior engineer, I tend to point out that reviewing inexperienced code is a more difficult art than writing it, and onboarding junior engineers is something I do so I can help them grow; it's an investment I'm making in someone so they'll eventually not need through, difficult reviews to me, AI coding would present me with the downsides of giving a task to a more junior engineer without all that work translating into any potential for growth

@swetland@chaos.social I kind of feel like the issue is that there are some people in tech who've always looked for an excuse to be elitist, and who've just ported that elitism over from "you're not a real programmer if you use arduino" for the purpose of getting to be elitist, rather than trying to make a correct point; and I'm starting to see "stop using AI, this is obviously slop code" applied to code that was written by e.g. students by hand.

@Lapizistik and there's nothing special about the null hypothesis other that it's already there, etc etc =p

@Lapizistik the phrase always sticks in my head as "hesistation is always easy; and rarely useful" (from the villain of a silicon-valley-"human-rationality"-obsessed-cult-leader's harry potter fan fiction; you can't make this shit up)

@elise nice work! I haven't looked at the TX2 too much, but if you're interested, it'd be fun to chat at congress -- one NVIDIA bootloader-breaker to another. :)
