I'm tweeting this in the hope that it will help me to not forget about it again (I just gave a live demo presentation where I typed this the long way). Since curl 7.82.0 (released March 2022) you can use:

curl --json '{"foo":"bar"}'

instead of:

curl -H "Content-Type: application/json" -d '{"foo":"bar"}'

It also adds the appropriate Accept header.

@Uknzguy@mastodon.nz A better description of my employment situation is that I have no option but to work from home, and it's been that way since 2012 - I work for a completely remote, globally distributed company. We have no office in any country.

@brennansv@sfba.social @timbray@mastodon.cloud It sounds like you want X.509 certificates. Driver presents you with a certificate signed by a certificate chain with a root authority that you trust. You can then cryptographically verify that their certificate saying they passed a background check has been asserted through a system that you trust. No need for blockchain there.

Completely unscientific poll, what keyboard layout (or variant of) do you use?

I wish more services would support WebAuthn security keys for 2FA. I currently have 15 accounts in my TOTP app. It's getting hard to find them when I need a code. When WebAuthn is an option, I register both my USB key and my phone, my phone is more convenient (just push a button, plus it provides biometric checking so is more secure), but my USB key will work even if my phone dies.

@oysta@mastodon.oysta.au Meanwhile my Canadian wife is like "talk to me about the cold when it's -30ºC" with no hint of exaggeration.

@oysta@mastodon.oysta.au I know, got down to -3°C here this morning. Similar for you where you are? At least it's getting up to 12°C today, as long as it gets over 10°C during the day it's all good.

@timbray@mastodon.cloud I was working for an investor backed startup during the height of the blockchain craze, and so our investors were frequently asking us if there was anything we could do with blockchain. The thing is, we're a serious engineering company that provides technology based on long proven computer science solutions to address problems in the distributed systems space. It wasn't in our blood to do smoke and mirrors. So we kept having to disappoint our investors.

@brennansv@sfba.social @timbray@mastodon.cloud It doesn't have to be a shared registry. The driver could just provide it to you, or the driver could give it to Uber/Lyft, who give it to you. The use of X.509 certificates means you don't have to trust the means by which you obtained the certificate. It's exactly the same concept as TLS certificates, there's no shared registry for them, and you don't have to trust the network over which it's given you.

@brennansv@sfba.social Yes, that's why I suggested using X.509, because all the standards you need already exist, such as certificate revocation: https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc6960
