I've been looking into dbt for data engineering and wanted to flesh out what the similarities and differences were to just using {targets} - I learned lots about both of them!

I wrote up my findings in this post

https://jcarroll.com.au/2026/05/04/comparing-r-s-targets-and-dbt-for-data-engineering/

Comparing R's {targets} and dbt for Data Engineering

I’m getting more and more into data engineering these days and having used R for a long time, I’m seeing a lot of problems that look nail-shaped to my R-shaped hammer. The available tools to solve those problems exist for (presumably) very good reasons, so I wanted to take some time to dig into how to use them and compare their workflows to what I would otherwise naively do in R.

New post: Schotter Plots in R

https://jcarroll.com.au/2026/04/17/schotter-plots-in-r/

in which I reproduce a famous plot in R based on translating some Python code, itself translated from ALGOL

Maybe I knew this at one point in the past, maybe not, but it just blew my mind (all over again, if I did)... 🤯

In a terminal, Ctrl+x Ctrl+e opens $EDITOR to edit the current command with whatever ergonomics you're more familiar with in that editor - amazing for long terminal commands.

Perhaps you saw the post series "Python is not a great language for data science"... well, here's

Haskell IS a Great Language for Data Science

Haskell IS a Great Language for Data Science

I’ve been learning Haskell for a few years now and I am really liking a lot of the features, not least the strong typing and functional approach. I thought it was lacking some of the things I missed from R until I found the dataHaskell project. In this post I’ll demonstrate some of the features and explain why I think it makes for a good (great?) data science language.

I've been keeping an eye on this since I first heard about it, and it looks like it now works! duckdb has a dplyr extension which can be installed - use dplyr code to slice and dice data within a duckdb session.

https://duckdb.org/community_extensions/extensions/dplyr

Shoutouts to the author @mrchypark@mastodon.social and to @DSLC@fosstodon.org for their 'DuckDB in Action' book club.

A bit of a long shot, but in the spirit of #fedihire I'm on the lookout for opportunities to contribute to R tooling. If your org could use some help developing or productionising an R package or some prototype R code, managing data access via databases or APIs, or translating between languages, drop me a line and let's discuss. Worldwide timezones supported. My services are listed here: http://jcarroll.click/services and I'm available to start immediately.

R/Pharma 2026 call for speakers is open until (approx) 02 May and we're once again running an APAC track for those not in America/Europe timezones.

Some of last year's sessions are available on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/rinpharma

We're interested to hear from people involved with R and Pharma, but also adjacent languages and industries.

Submit a proposal: https://sessionize.com/rpharma-2026/

@defuneste @noamross @tylermorganwall dbt is a python package, but it builds as an independent tool, a capability that isn't really found in R and I can't decide if I think it should or not. Quarto branched out that way and it opened doors.

@trevorld @coolbutuseless I'm in no danger of 200+ books for the year, but a quick lookup of pages for what I've read so far is around 4600 for my 21 books, ranging from just under 100 to over 400. I don't usually track pages. It's certainly on target for much more than previous years Number of books finished: 2023: 24 2024: 16 2025: 30

@tylermorganwall I presumed you could, but good to hear it confirmed. One question I'm left with: at what scale would dbt make more sense than {targets}?

Replying to
@noamross @defuneste @tylermorganwall this is one of the points I was trying to make in the Analysis section - I think dbt's scope ends there and expects an analyst to pick up the 'analysis ready' data in a separate project. {targets} can combine all the steps and keep building, but with the trade-off of maybe taking on too much responsibility. Hence my question of 'what is too big?'

@coolbutuseless @Dan (sidetracking) that book's worth a read, then? I had it on my list a few years ago and borrowed a copy but it was long so I never got around to it. I'm 21 books into 2026 already and after pencilling in The Brothers Karamazov for this year, every other book looks short.

@prophet@functional.cafe ah, that makes sense - I was originally worried that I was shortcutting the result by assigning it to _ but now I see the same is true of an assigned but not-yet-evaluated value. Thank you! I'll update the post. I couldn't get a clear answer elsewhere but it sounds like you may know - are the rewrite rules like rev/rev/id and map/filter fusion generally implemented or are these purely up to the user to write/activate?

It looks like I've made 309 pull requests in the 10 years I've been on GitHub, but I started somewhere. Last year we merged 12 pull requests and worked through merge conflicts, resetting changes, review suggestions - even I learned a few new things about how reviews work.

@prophet@functional.cafe so reverse . reverse isn't necessarily optimised for a finite list? I did look a the dump myself but figured I was using it wrong because I saw the double reverse. I know a lot of APLs have optimisations like this, or "last" being equivalent to the first element of a reversed (linked) list
