I'm glad evolution invented richly detailed vision, hearing, and other sensory qualia before it invented human-level sentience. Imagine if everything you knew about the world came from a photoreceptor, an accelerometer, some whiskers, and a vague impression of how hungry you currently are.

I would probably develop a better sense of direction though. Gotta practice my dead reckoning. Bumping around like a roomba. Better hope there are no cliffs on this planet.

A sound recording represents air pressure. But air pressure correlates to the *acceleration* of a vibrating surface, not position or velocity, and a speaker reproduces sound by accelerating the speaker cone. So recordings are basically acceleration.

An electric guitar pickup magnetically measures the *velocity* of a metal string. I want to know: is there typically a conversion from velocity to acceleration, or is the signal just interpreted as if it were acceleration?

How does a loudspeaker cone generate acoustical pressure?

Introduction This post is inspired the thread "Which way is up", started by @René - Acculution.com, and especially by a comment from @BeerBear. In "Which way is up" René shows that when replaying a sine wave, the maximum pressure coincides with the point when the loudspeaker cone is at maximum...

@runevision Maybe at some point these finer voronoi octaves could transition into an algorithm like the one you described here. You know, in case you needed another nerd snipe. Bonus points for meanders and oxbow lakes.

@mcc@mastodon.social I sometimes find dreaming to be frustrating, because my computer prosthetic doesn't function very well in dreams. I can imagine that it responds to my commands, but those responses don't meet the standard of quality I expect from my computer. In dreams, my computer is just as forgetful as I am, and I often find myself going in circles trying to accomplish tasks that would have been trivial with an actual functioning computer.
