Chess players in Warsaw, in June 2022 for Pixel Heaven conference. (In the garden of Proces Kawki café) I did this watercolor for a Galerie Maeght show in Paris last February, based on a rough sketch in my sketchbook, and my memory of the scene, which touched me for many reasons.
Hi, I'm Jordan Mechner, creator of Prince of Persia. I've written and drawn a nonfiction graphic novel, "Replay."
It's a memoir of my four decades making games, interwoven with three generations of my family story.
(And yes, it has the bit where I videotape my brother in our NY high school parking lot in 1985.)

I'm donating to https://archive.org today, taking advantage of a generous anonymous donor's offer to match all gifts received before Dec. 31, 2023. It's an incredible, precious resource that relies on our support. This collage shows a small fraction of the archived content I was able to quickly find online (ad-free) and use in my own work this year, thanks to @internetarchive@mastodon.archive.org. Please share!
Artist Robert Florczak and John Romero both tipped me that the original @princeofpersia game box painting is up for auction! Last time I saw it was in an office in Broderbund in 1989. The artist gifted it to his friend Kevin, who modeled for Jaffar. He kept it for over 30 years, now it's up for grabs. Whoever ends up owning it, let me know!
(Or donate it to the Strong Museum of Play in Rochester, NY, so it can reunite with the Karateka painting :)
