Enthusiastic geographer. Sporadic Sydneysider.

I blog about buses, podcast about Sydney's history and documentarised the Macquarie River.

Good takes are my own. Bad takes must be someone else's.

Interesting how most of the 'running out of fuel/plans cancelled' type news stories show people with big utes or pulling huge caravans.

You can get a caravan that weighs in the hundreds of kilos and you can tow it with anything bigger than a Honda jazz. Its not that you can't afford to get your kids to school, go to the shops or drive to the national park for Easter- its that you can't afford to drag your suv or oversized ute to those places. Time to consider an e bike? Ev? Or how about just an outback or camry?

We've watched people join in the vehicle arms race for the last decade and decried the downside. Seems the owners are catching up...

@ptua@mastodon.social The steady improvement of regional train frequencies in Victoria is so impressive. Theres been improvements in nsw on blue mountains line (now mostly hourly to lithgow since 2025) and south coast uplift is coming soon, but the longer distance trains are still at their 1990s levels.

@augustusbrown@aus.social This looks pretty good! Also no hard infrastructure so if demand justifies it will be achievable to widen.

@timrichards@aus.social Yeah comfort is a factor. Many of Sydney's old tram routes are all day frequent now, which is easier to deploy with buses than trams. Same with accessibility improvements and generally a bus is faster in mixed traffic than a tram. Speed, frequency and to a lesser extent accessibility are bigger determinates of function (and thus patronage) than comfort. Of course if trams are separated from mixed traffic its a different story - hence the high patronage on l1,2,3 (we won't mention l4...) but it seems like thats easier to do as a brand new project than as an update to existing infrastructure. @danielbowen@mastodon.social

@Sheep_Overboard@infosec.exchange The choice of models was somewhat arbitrary! One 35 degree weekend away we fit 5 adult men, all their luggage, 7 cases of beer and 3 bags of ice into a yaris. The aircon struggled, we had to creep over the potholes but we got there!

@danielbowen@mastodon.social For years I thought it was a travesty that sydney ripped up its trams. But in some instances buses do just as good of a job and, if Melbourne (and toronto) is anything to go by, theres no way we'd have separated corridors if they hadve been retained. In some ways i think sydney came out on top by pulling them up and starting again. From a heritage point of view it is sad though, at least weve got Melbourne as a living museum piece!

@ptua@mastodon.social Are the standard gauge tracks in Melbourne electrified at all? Im wondering how much mileage they'll actually get out of the bimodal power supply. Syd to Melbourne is only from central to macarthur
