Years ago I was wandering round a graveyard in Durham Co. on a snowy day. Graveyards are easier to transcribe in winter when vegetation has died back. Under my coat I had a tape recorder into which I was reading the headstones for later transcription. To clear moss and snow I had a small brush. Near the graveyard wall I tripped over a branch buried in the snow and in an effort to protect the tape recorder I fell flat on my face. I uttered a few choice words and from the wall heard 'Tut Tut Tut.' I looked up to see two police officers who had been told about a strange man shambling around the graveyard, scrabbling at the stones and muttering to himself. #genealogy #graveyards

Why do so few scientists use Fahrenheit? According to Isaac Asimov, the original 100°F "fixed point" may have been based on a sick cow with a fever. A 300-year-old error that still dictates US weather today. Precision matters. #HistoryOfScience #Physics #Brevity #Celsius
Instead of ,"How was school?" try:
1. What was the best part of your day at school?
2. What mistake did you learn from today?
3. Who were you proud of today?
4. What's one thing you could have made better today?
5. Who did you help today?
6. What was the most interesting thing you learned today?
7. What new thing do you want to try?
@davidtoddmccarty@me.dm I have to admit that, if this was a textbook, and I was a student, such a marked up book would save me a lot of time provided I agreed with it,
@davidtoddmccarty@me.dm You may cover an ebook with notes but it's still readable and the notes can be hidden or removed. Libraries have to spend a fortune replacing books like this

@historydefined@mastodonapp.uk A friend of mine was parked in a torrential storm in Canada when the car was hit by lightning. The airbags deployed. Unfortunately, he happened to be kneeling on his seat reaching to his bag on the back seat. He was uncomfortable sitting for a week.

Here's why I installed a reverse osmosis water filter under the sink
Do you drink bottled water?
If you do then that's both good and bad:
The good
It's considered healthy. Most of us don't drink enough water.
It doesn't have the nasty chlorine taste of tap water.
It is less likely to have nasties such as pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers or fluorides (Fluorides help children's teeth but are an accumulative poison to adults harming your joints)
The bad
It's expensive.
It causes plastic waste. Most bottles are not recycled.
It is likely to add to plastic nanoparticles in your body.
Here's my setup...

So what is the answer?
Invest in an under-sink reverse osmosis water filter, re-mineralization kit and re-usable drink container such as a Contigo. It will remove the nasties from tap water, put back the healthy minerals and taste great. Such a system is expensive to set up initially (£300) but will save you money in the long run. I have one and use it for drinking, cooking and even watering house plants. The one I use has two filters, one lasting a year and the other two years. I recently bought both filters and a re-mineralization kit and paid £106.

If you're looking to replace those classic Windows 7 animated backdrops, this water vole video works perfectly with Lively Wallpaper on Windows 11.
It has a tiny blink-and-you'll-miss-it glitch, but as a background element, it’s super relaxing.

UCSF researchers found that DNA folds like "origami" to create individual barcodes for every cell, allowing the brain to self-organize. https://www.ucsf.edu/news/2026/01/431411/two-new-breakthroughs-advance-neurological-disorders-and-cancer-research

The search for extra-terrestrial life (SETI)
has been looking for 60 years and has found nothing! Why not? If you compare the galaxy with the earth's ocean then SETI has searched thoroughly just one bathtub of ocean. If you searched a bathtub of sea water and found no fish would it be safe to say there are no fish in the ocean?
