I gave a talk in Paris today! But if you weren't there, I also wrote a blogpost about the same topic: https://donsz.nl/blog/externally-implementable-items/ It's about a feature of the rust compiler that's been in the make for 2 years now, but importantly, not just by me. It's about how many people's knowledge combine to make even something not so bit happen in the compiler, and how we learn from each other along the way, every single day.

I usually do computer science, mostly using and contributing to rust. Otherwise, you'll probably find me playing my guitar, petting a cat or playing board games with friends (who may also be cats). rust-lang T-compiler member, and contributing to rustc full time. Founded a company called Hexcat with an office in Delft. Before that, I designed and gave courses at the TU Delft on using rust in embedded systems.

@kinnison@social.flarn.net this might be interesting to you. Also contains a few garbage collection libraries, most of the big ones. https://donsz.nl/blog/arenas/

@guenther@chaos.social @terts@mastodon.online good question. Our best explanation is that because the binding is not yet initialized it just creates three separate bindings, not caring about copying or cloning or whatever since there's no data to copy or clone. Note that a let binding can be a pattern, so the `@ c` is just a pattern matching You just get `c: Foo`, `a: T` and `b: i32`. Now the binding van be used separately, and assignments to each don't affect the other. However, type inference does go through this. Both c.a and a have type T and so `Default` works because we assign a string to the a field of Foo
