made these for the ultramarine linux wallpaper contest but i thought I'd share the completed results here too since. yknow. yea
the overall design is inspired by the ultrakill title screen and Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man sketch. The character is Mizuki, the mascot of Ultramarine Linux. Light and dark variant too, which (in my testing) look excellent when syncing your wallpaper with your system color mode.

@alice@mk.nyaa.place I've not had issues with load times in cemu (about 1-5 seconds when fast traveling, with all the DLCs installed), and while admittedly higher res textures would be nice, the game still looks excellent at 1080p and using the cemu graphics packs to increase the shadow resolution and screenspace reflection samples.

Regardless of it probably being suboptimal fighting master kohgha while I'm still wanting to explore the world, it was a very entertaining fight.

they should just make a lawn mower for people like me who put off mowing the lawn for as long as possible and then have to cut through a mini jungle.
that is to say they should make a lawn mower that is basically a wood chipper facing into the grass

@solonovamax@tech.lgbt i wouldn't want one big centralized server for this either, hence my suggestion for federation, however federation brings complexity and i'm not smart enough to think through how to make that work.

kinda crazy Nintendo wants me to buy a whole new console and a $10 upgrade dlc just to play botw at 60fps when I can do it on my PC with my dump of the Wii U version and still play with my switch pro controller

@alice@mk.nyaa.place timing a fast travel from a memory point near Hyrule castle to hateno tower, initiating the fast travel (including the animation of link being teleported away) to the end of the loading screen was roughly 15 seconds total. In normal gameplay it's basically nothing, at least to me

idea: google fcm but not google and not firebase and as a thing for linux apps to use so they can reliably give users notifications and data updates without always running
no idea how to do it without some kind of control hub that developers subscribe to and use, cuz the idea is that you replace every app's own little service on-device with just one that'll fetch everything for the other apps. maybe a federated approach but when the goal is "reliably provide notifications" i feel like federation is kinda not the best thing here. instances come up and down and if the instance your system uses disappears you dont get notifications anymore.
i wouldn't say "just use nfty/pushbullet/somethingelse" about this either because the idea is a unified service that ideally as many user-facing linux apps as possible utilize. I dont think any apps i use consistently use any of those.
and i think the pitch is somewhat sound, if a bit of a stretch in viability, you'd have to convince not only applications to use this new theoretical service for getting data/notifications, but you'd have to convince distro maintainers to package and provide it out of the box for the best effect. you'd probably want to convince the maintainers of the KDE and GNOME desktops to integrate their own implementations into their stack, with XDG portals. it'd be an enormous effort with the grand total effect of... slightly better battery life on a niche within a niche of users? i guess laptop users would benefit if apps like signal and discord stopped running in the background and opted for this system to get notifications from their servers to users. i guess.
this whole idea stems from me being kinda annoyed when i see sum bs like "6 background apps" in my gnome quick settings knowing full well that on a platform like my android phone its like 2 and its because they do things FCM doesn't provide.

@SeaDonut@tech.lgbt I don't believe Samsung's implementation uses much on the software side. There's literally like two...layers? of pixels on the display and it switches between them.
What has you say that a hardware function like this would require cloud infrastructure

Okay so mom got the new Samsung Galaxy phone and we were messing with the privacy screen feature and it's so good. What is a normal notification to my mom was for me (who was slightly to the left of the display) a black spot on the screen. Incredible tech.
However I also learned that the Samsung browser doesn't have an export button for bookmarks. Amazing hardware, awful software as usual with Samsung

@alice@mk.nyaa.place I'd like to note as well that I'm using cemu in a proxmox VM that I might not have configured correctly for the fastest read/write times, and on top of that the system isn't running from my fastest storage, it could possibly be made even faster!

@SeaDonut@tech.lgbt no. what. no. it just changes between normal pixels and some special "narrow" pixels. the system just renders notifications, specific apps the user picks, or the whole screen (if the user chooses) with those special pixels.
Like the only software element here is just the system UI picking between normal and narrow pixels to use for elements on screen.
