crates.io is central in Rust ecosystem, and yet, in my opinion, it doesn't fulfill its mission on multiple aspects. So much that an alternative website (libs.rs) was created. So I wrote a blog post about this: https://blog.guillaume-gomez.fr/articles/2026-07-13+crates.io+front-end+and+its+accessiblity+issue%28s%29 Warning: it's mostly me venting out and describing what I consider issues in crates.io. #rust #rustlang

Starting tomorrow, you will be able (on linux without cross-compilation) to install and use the Rust GCC backend directly from rustup! To do so:

rustup component add rustc-codegen-gcc

Thanks a lot to Kobzol for all their work to making it a reality!

Useless news for most people but the diagnostic/lint rust compiler internal API rework is now finished (minus cleanups) after 26 PRs! \o/

Lints now share the same code with the other diagnostics, no more weird intermediate types for lints emitted before the diagnostic system is created (looking at you attribute parser). That feels so much better. :)

If you're interested about the whole implementation history, here's the tracking issue: https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/153099

docs.rs builds are about to change. If you have crates published on crates.io/docs.rs, I recommend you read this blog post in case you might be impacted by this change: https://blog.rust-lang.org/2026/04/04/docsrs-only-default-targets/

Didn't communicate much about my work on the Rust project lately (and I'm very much behind everything I want to work on T_T). Although, I did a lot of "invisible" work. For example: lints and warnings/errors now share the same API, no more weird differences between the two!

Tracking issue for that is: https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/153099 (the work is not complete yet!).

I also fixed some bugs in rustdoc for the scrape-examples feature in https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/154017.

And I fixed a bug in the doc_cfg feature (getting closer to stabilization with each fix 😅) in https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/153964. The bug came from how rustdoc handles impls: they are "cleaned" on their own after we cleaned everything else. We query blanket impls and trait impls, meaning that they're not correctly "placed" in the rustdoc AST, preventing doc_cfg top-down approach to work for them. I explained the bug more in details in the PR if you're interested in the tech details. :)

That's it folks!

Rust compiler docs enabled the rustdoc macro expansion feature (in https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/150022).

To see it in action:

RE: https://toot.cat/@imperio/117033501477427549 Nevermind! Completely broke Rust CI (after merge, that's new, more fun for the infra team 😈 ) Reverting it. Follow me for more tips on how to make a whole project lose 3 hours of their time with one small PR! T_T

New Rust in Paris speaker is Arthur Carcano! His talk is named "Rust, Unicode gotchas, and the eight different string types". If you ever wanted to know what's the difference between String and OsString, you should definitely watch this talk!

See you on friday!

Released the 0.38.3 version of the sysinfo Rust crate which allows you to query systems information.

This release improved the accuracy of system memory information on macOS.

PS: I know the current "lock" on the objc2-* dependencies is an issue. I plan to make a major release to release this constraint at some point (yeay minor semver releases which remove old(er) systems support...).

Added a new disallowed_fields Rust clippy lint: it allows you to configure some fields (on structs and enums) you want to forbid to be used in your codebase.

Enjoy!

Replying to
@jsbarretto@social.coop @bjorn3@hachyderm.io @veloren@floss.social Weeeell, the GCC backend still needs a lot of work, notably on performance, so I wouldn't be too surprised that there are some differences in this regard.

Added a new rust clippy lint which checks if transmute annotations are missing. It's really easy to miss out when you update your code that the transmute is getting a different input type or generating a different output, potentially generating invalid code. Should not be possible anymore now.

Replying to
@dasmatus@raphus.social You mean the scraped example feature? Because it's still completely broken and all the people who wanted it are not really around anymore, so I'm mostly the one trying to keep pieces together on this, although I personally didn't want this feature in the first place as I thought the crazy amount of code in multiple projects in Rust was not worth it imo.
