I've asked Claude to implement a Rust port of JS library given source code in another directory: there's already one such implementation in OSS, mine. Result?

AI blatantly plagiarised my OSS code, including parts that were not present in source it was pointed to port.

Upon prohibiting it to touch outside implementations and focus on translating local directory... it ignored command and plagiarised my work again. It did the same with C# port and one existing impl.

Tbh. I think that this should be a mandatory in education right now - especially in computer science field. There's no magic, no ghost in the machine.

I came to this job because I believed that working in tech sector is the most accessible way to improve lives of the people.

Then was "I wonder what new dumb shit are they trying to pull off" phase.

Nowadays, every tech news is a new episode of "horrors beyond my comprehension".

The biggest difference in moving from regular employment back to contracts is that now I work from dawn to dusk, 7 days a week with no vacation on sight. And I don't know if I have work secured to the end of the year.

Quite good battle report about state of Rust's Tauri framework: https://gethopp.app/blog/hate-webkit

I've heard about these issues before, which is one of the reasons why I decided to use Flutter + Rust bridge for some of my own projects.

@tastapod You get what you pay for: the subscription plan only specifies "usage*", it doesn't provide any measurable obligation, only good vibes ;)

A little pearl I've just found - article (+ working Scala example) explaining how cost-based SQL query optimiser works: https://github.com/tuannh982/query-planner-guide

Github will now train AI on your private repositories code as well.

Personally, I'll keep the open source code that I'm paid for open and available on GH. But my experiments and ideas will live on Radicle, on my own machines.

From April 24 onward, interaction data from Copilot Free, Pro, and Pro+ users will be used to train and improve our AI models unless they opt out.

@alexelcu@mastodon.social Tbh. I lost any incentive to build open source, except when I'm being paid to do so.

I used to love coding while in travel (eg. train). Zero distractions, pure focus, being "in the zone".

With AI, I feel more like debugging CI issues. Have to be online, feedback loop counted in minutes, non stop context-switching.

This somewhat resonates with me now:

Tbh. something that Claude is pretty good at is figuring out Rust borrow checker errors.

Why do you even bother implementing a Radix tree if you didn't include prefix range scans?

Since SQLite uses WAL+memory mapped index (that can hold transactions of arbitrary size), I was thinking about using the same design instead of Memtables for LSM.

I was discussing it with my digital slave LLM, but while knowledgeable, it's not really good for brainstorming new ideas.

I'm starting to dislike length-prefixed encodings. Good for in-memory objects, but if you want to streamline data from the disk, it's becoming PITA.

Orange site words of wisdom:

"We really shouldn't allow web developers more than 128kbit of connection speed, anything more and they just make nonsense out of it."

Most of the video players I've found in Flutter use either file path or HTTP URL (for partial content streaming).

Even though I have my own video sync mechanism, I'm still forced to spin a loopback server (on a native app) just so that I can provide video to a widget living in the same process...

First milestone for ysr (read: wiser) is complete - it's a yrs/yjs compatible library that runs natively on disk (via LMDB). No need for separate persistence, no need to load entire doc into memory.

Currently supports update binary compatibility for maps, lists, rich text: https://github.com/Horusiath/ysr

Getting a lot of videos on YT from American vloggers prising Poland recently.

Folks, my friend is bookstore clerk. She earns ~1000USD/mo (net). She lives with her husband in 1BR, which is 1000USD/mo. This is considered as the best era in history of the country.

Replying to
@JessTheUnstill@infosec.exchange tbh. any codebase that's majority driven by gen AI is pretty much unmaintainable by hand, especially when other teammates are using AI in the meantime.
