The highest mountains of the Appenine range on the Italian peninsula (excluding Mount Etna on Sicily) is the Gran Sasso range in the Abruzzo region, here pictured from the hills of the Teramo province.

Main peak is the Corno Grande (2912m), then to the right: Corno Piccolo, Pizzo Intermesoli and the bulk of Monte Corvo, all above 2500 meters. To the left there are more mountains, here only Monte Aquila and Monte Brancastello. Picture from 2015.

Yesterday was a perfect day for a snowshoe walk in the Abruzzo mountains. From 1400 meters up, there is still a lot of snow, even though it is melting rapidly now. Higher up there is still to much avalanche risk, so we stayed below 1700 meters. The walk we did starts at Prati di Tivo, a small ski resort, that has not really been functional for a couple of years now. Great views, great company!

As far as I can see it was an improvement on the previous stricter Rights of Way situation.

It is mostly countries with viking influence that have it, noteably England, and therefore a waterered down version of the concept was inherited by other anglosaxon countries like New Zealand, Australia etc. Austria is much stricter on access on private land, especially production forests than the Nordics. The latin countries in Europe do not have freedom to roam on uncultivated private land. In Italy it is even stranger: hikers cannot pass, but if you carry a rifle for hunting you are allowed to roam uncultivated private land. Luckily there are a lot of National Parks that are managed differently.

@NickEast_IndieWriter I agree. I'd love to see a European initiative for that.

Panorama on the Abruzzo mountain chain of the Gran Sasso and the Monti della Laga. On the left the 3 main tops of the western Gran Sasso chain, from left to right: Corno Grande (2912m) and Corno Piccolo, Pizzo Intermesoli and the bulk of the Monte Corvo massive. On the right, on the horizon, the Monti della Laga, with the highest, Monte Gorzano topping 2458 meters.

Picture march 2022; at the moment (april 2026) there is a lot more snow!

Red weather alert for the coastal part of the Abruzzo region! At the moment (1st of April 2026) we're in an uninterupted 72 hours of rain, predicted to bring 200mm of rain and snow in 3 days to the Abruzzo region, normally falling in 2 months. Before Easter not the right weather for hiking higher up in the mountains and after Easter take care to check avalanche risks. On the road watch out for landslides and muddy patches that can be slippery!
