@mjg59@nondeterministic.computer I don't have the nuance of whomever you're replying to, so broadly: (Approximately) no one complains about Yubikeys, datacenter HSMs, etc., because context matters. FIDO deployment wasn't going to lead to controlling what computers you can use the web with. But Google's ReCAPTCHA replacement has as a specific tactic to stop people operating outside the phone duopoly from using portions of the web. And it probably won't even be good at their alleged goal: https://bsky.app/profile/retr0.id/post/3mljwh4k4k225

anyway I guess this is proof that a full Play Integrity bypass is within "weekend project" territory. this approach does not exploit any bugs or rely on leaked key material, so it cannot be patched. [contains quote post or other embedded content]

@lcamtuf Thanks, this'll be really useful. But it's too much friction to get started. Could you add installation using curl | bash, please?

@HalvarFlake@mastodon.social I feel like the scale of very large projects in software (which I assume you're talking about with "ambition") isn't limited by the ability to write code, but the ability to understand the whole system as a group, communicate it within the group, and set up good incentives within and outside the project. None of these are helped with 2025-era LLMs, and I imagine not 2026's either. Building rickety structures faster seems unhelpful. Is my logic flawed?

@mjg59@nondeterministic.computer Fair point. My brokerage restricted by key vendor too. But certain implementations of attestation are going to bias more towards particular uses. Yubikeys are *mostly* (to me) good. I think Google Play Integrity, because it is flaky for security yet effective for control, is mostly bad. That's why I argue against this particular "technology" or at least implementation of it. I can't tell if I'm arguing something you disagree with though :).

@trademark@fosstodon.org @HalvarFlake@mastodon.social Some ways I would be wrong:

  • If the ai-2027 crowd is right, humans won't have to understand the software. This is an argument for (at least) localized superintelligence, basically.

  • If the LLM can construct abstraction layers so well designed and reliable that devs don't have to understand them, (like the OS usually is for applications), humans can spend their time on other things. But, I suspect this is basically superintelligence too.

@dangoodin @Niklas There was (at least from my perspective as a reader) a good solution: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scroll_(web_service) . Twitter (pre-Elon) chewed them up. But also, some publications decided to keep requiring a paywall and just killed the ads behind said paywall, or maybe the other way around, I forget. It was easily defeated by ad-blockers, regardless. A version that actually paid for reading the site without ads or tracking (at higher expense) would be welcome.

With people gearing up to rapidly update software because of Claude Mythos's bugs, it seems like a great time to attack some supply chains.

"Humans check the work after an LLM does it" can't be reliable. Humans will just check the LLMs' work less and less carefully, because that's how human brains work.

The NYT should only deceive us through omission, bad framing, and bothsidesism, not hallucinations:

@trademark@fosstodon.org @HalvarFlake@mastodon.social In the context of very large projects, e.g. Pyramids and the Empire State Building, those tools already have to exist. Maybe getting them done faster speeds up initial scaling for a project. Once a project's big enough, though, you have to revise, re-revise, re-re-revise, etc., these systems too. You have to understand what they're doing and what their real requirements are, still. So my guess is that LLMs don't help the biggest software projects get that much bigger.

@mjg59@nondeterministic.computer Ah OK, yeah I can't go so far as to oppose all attestation yet. If you had to bring up "free software gets used in weapons, ya know", I can only imagine. Where I sit right now: Yubikeys and secure elements are pretty good. Google Play Integrity is bad.
