A wakeup call
The inclusion of Autistici/Inventati on the US Specially Designated Global Terrorist list is a kick in the guts for all of us hosting services for others, whether it's fediverse instances, blogs, mailing lists or anything else. While most of us will hopefully never be on the receiving end of such a designation, the US regime has demonstrated how easily they can ruin our lives by throwing a politically motivated terror designation our way.
You may think that you're safe. You're not doing anything illegal after all. Just providing some infrastructure, a services or a place for people to come together and communicate. Privately. In confidence. Anonymously.
That was also what Autistici/Inventati was doing.
We're all targets now. And if we don't stand up against it, we let the fascists win!
In Autistici/Inventati's own words:
Let us have a thousand servers, a thousand networks. Let us flood them with possibilities until they run out of time and money to pursue and persecute us.

Love that attitude!
Great writeup and reminder about how easy it is to be tricked by the simple stuff. Using homoglyphs like these is relatively common in phishing emails, but we may not bee good enough at looking for them elsewhere.

OpenJDK 27 released to FreeBSD ports tree
I just pushed a port for OpenJDK 27 to the main branch of the FreeBSD ports tree.
In additions to the upstream changes, the following BSD specific improvements are included:
Fix os::naked_short_nanosleep on OpenBSD when < 20 miliseconds.Only return symbols that match the requested address for dladdr(3) on BSD.
The latter also reverts the default visibility of symbols in libjvm.so to hidden, which should make loading the library faster, and reduce the memory consumption slightly.
As always thanks to @FreeBSDFoundation@mastodon.social for sponsoring my work on the OpenJDK for FreeBSD, and also to Kurt Miller for digging into the details for the BSD specific fixes for this release.

From the OpenJDK Interim Policy on Generative AI.
It's good to see at least some project take an informed approach to this issue. Hopefully this will not change drastically when Oracle comes around with their suggested policy later on.

Contributions in the OpenJDK Community must not include content generated, in part or in full, by large language models, diffusion models, or similar deep-learning systems. Content, in this context, includes but is not limited to source code, text, and images in OpenJDK Git repositories, GitHub pull requests, e-mail messages, wiki pages, and JBS issues.
Contributors in the OpenJDK Community may use generative AI tools privately to help comprehend, debug, and review OpenJDK code and other content, and to do research related to OpenJDK Projects, so long as they do not contribute content generated by such tools.

diaspora* version 0.9.1.0 released!
Ohai there, it's been a while! We just released a new minor version, and while it isn't too exciting, it contains a bunch of security fix in both our code and external dependencies, as well as some bugfixes, and one nice feature!
Given that this is a security update, we encourage podmins to update as soon as possible.
A huge thanks to all the contributors from diaspora*'s amazing community! If you want to help make diaspora* even better, please check out our getting started guide. Please see the changelog for a complete list of changes made in this release.
Notable Changes
For podmins, update instructions are available as usual in the wiki.
If you are a user not running your own pod, there is nothing you need to do!
