The thing about the "Iran hacks UK power station" story is that the details are sparse and the public attribution seemingly weak. It's not like we haven't gone through years of UK hacks being blamed on nation states and then later revealed to have been a teenager in Cardiff or whatever.

It's funny that a lot of people are panicking about AI being able to discover software vulnerabilities, but also relaxed about AI introducing vulnerabilities? I guess if you spend enough tokens it'll balance itself out.

The thing about denying a UK visa for Hasan Piker is that, unless a clear explanation is given otherwise, it gives a strong impression that criticism of the Israeli government is prohibited.

Love to see 2026's "stop using fuel unnecessarily" dovetail with 2026's "get back to the office".

I used the term "air gap" with someone who grew up with ubiquitous wifi, and had to explain that the term made more sense when devices needed a network cable.

The EU should get involved and demand that Chrome *also* silently install some other AI models.

@ianbetteridge But the Daily Mail front page said it was "Red Ed's Green Idiocy" that stopped them from building it?

Catching up with The Ultimates (2024) comics, and issue 21 really is subtext-as-text.

"Net Zero" as an industry, rather than a political topic, is worth £100b to the UK economy. All UK commercial fishing is barely £1b (before preparation).

I don’t draw attention to positive developments in case that somehow triggers action to counter them.

Heard a news report this morning about water companies that used “600 hours of sewage” as an amount. That’s not really meaningful as an amount (beyond the contextual suggestion that it’s terrible), and would actually need some degree of explanation - which of course the news doesn’t provide.

GOV.UK Pay is replacing Stripe with Dutch fintech Adyen.

I assume they're going to be supporting the new Open Banking APIs in the near future.

People going to have to learn to stop thanking LLMs in the same way a generation had to train themselves not to leave the tap running when they brush their teeth.

Whenever I visit YouTube, the front page is all "American reacts to mundane British things", because I haven't been able to train myself not to click on thumbnails of shocked faces accompanied by text like "ELTON JOHN IS BRITISH?!", "RUGBY PLAYERS DON'T WEAR HELMETS?!"

Personal theory that Apple keeps holding back their on-device AI push until the cloud AI companies stop heavily subsidising users.

UKHSA Dashboard has added graphs for 8 years of antibiotic use, and for all of the publicity regarding antibiotic resistance, we're not really seeing a downturn in use.

@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social is it not the case that the only way to avoid this is to use Windows Professional, or have they changed that with Windows 11 as well?

@jmason@mastodon.ie too bad if your mail server didn’t implement an experimental RFC, I guess Exim in Debian, for example, doesn’t ship with ARC (bug 1058808)

@philgyford@mastodon.social I've got lots of little rituals originating as workarounds for things I no longer use, that I consciously choose to keep. Sometimes they inadvertently save me from new bugs. I sometimes break very large files into 650MB chunks if I need to transfer them somewhere.
