Hi. Specifically, the first mentioned fix: Fixed a bug in the notification page that made snac hang forever while trying to read abnormally big files. Some users had detected very big files (caused by probably intentionally malicious posts) in the notification area that made it unaccesible. The fix consists in a) taking care that those humungous files are no longer created, and b) if they already exist, they are ignored. Thanks for the FreeBSD port!

I've just published version 2.95 of #snac, the simple, minimalistic #ActivityPub instance server written in C. This is an important release, as it fixes an issue that can lead to denial of service attacks, so please update as soon as possible. It also includes the following changes: Fixed a bug in the notification page that made snac hang forever while trying to read abnormally big files. Improved support for text-only web browsers: it's now possible to configure a set of web browser user-agent strings that will receive simpler HTML in the private timeline web UI. Basically, it consists in avoiding details / summary HTML tags as much as possible. Added some fixes to media proxy code. Fixed EmojiReact code to allow any emoticon defined in emojis.json, not only those with colon-wrapped identifiers. Fixed a bug in notification filtering (paging was sometimes incorrect). Added a notification filter for Webmentions. Mastodon API: Don't return reactions count as string (contributed by mkljczk), implemented GET /v1/media (contributed by clairemont). Fixed bug in documentation examples (contributed by Sprite_tm). Updated Ukrainian and Russian translations (contributed by wincentbalin and koru). https://comam.es/what-is-snac If you find #snac useful, please consider buying grunfink a coffee or contributing via LiberaPay. #snacAnnounces #FrugalFediverse

Hi. Bookmarks last forever, unless there is a bug that I don't know of. But, if a bookmarked post is deleted by its creator, their wish is respected and you won't keep it.

grunfink - creator of snac, who made all of this possible using very few resources, on a 4 euro per month VM Thank you very much to you, Stefano. Your Fedimeteo service is a greatly valuable public service, and even if it was the only use of #snac out there, I would be fully satisfied. Your snac posts can be fancyMessages in snac allow a special subset of Markdown, that includes emphasized, strong, monospaced, strikethrough and underlined styles by surrounding text with one asterisk, two asterisks, backquotes, two tildes and two underlines, respectively.

Line breaks are respected and output as you write them.

Prepending a greater-than symbol in a line makes it a quote:
This is quoted text

All angle-prepended lines are grouped in the same blockquote
It also allows preformatted text using three backquotes in a single line:

  /* this is preformatted text */

struct node {
struct node *prev;
struct node *next;
};

  • One level bullet lists
  • are also supported,
  • by starting a line with a hyphen or asterisk followed by a space.
URLs like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page are made clickable.

Links can also be written in standard Markdown style.

Some emojis: 😆 ❤️ 🍺 🤷 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Image URLs written in standard Markdown style for images are converted to ActivityPub attachments.

Three minus symbols in a line make a separator:

Headings can be defined using one, two, or three hash symbols in the beginning of a line, followed by a blank:

header level 1header level 2header level 3But please take note that every ActivityPub implementation out there have its own rules for filtering out these formatting styles, so you can only guess what other people will really see.

These acrobatics are better documented in the snac(5) man page.

WHAT IS THIS SNAC THING?

I've just published version 2.91 of #snac, the simple, minimalistic #ActivityPub instance server written in C. It includes the following changes:

Fixed some local posts not being shown if the replied post is deleted.

Fixed web UI incorrect links to public posts for some configurations.

Fixed encoding bug in Mastodon-style share links.

Fixed an error that made imposible to leave empty the following hashtags or blocked hashtags from the web UI.

Include post attachments in the RSS feed entries.

Added some OpenBSD-specific documentation (contributed by oxzi).

Fixed some timezones (contributed by matoken).

Fixed some crashes (special thanks to Louis Merlin for helping me with this).

Updated Docker scripts to avoid generating a useless log file.

Fixed several memory leaks, key generation errors and HTML inconsistencies (contributed by dandelions).

Added ostatus.org and FEP-3b86 data to Webfinger objects.

Added a new CONTRIBUTING.md file. Among other guidelines, I explicitly say there that AI contributions are NOT accepted.

snac is now available as a Yunohost app. Thank you very much to Bruno Cesar Rocha for this.

Hi. The #ActivityPub specification just says that, for an edited post, an updated attribute must be set to the latest modification date, and an Update activity to the modified Note object be sent out there. There are no provisions for a history of changes or a modification reason that I know of.

I've just published version 2.92 of #snac, the simple, minimalistic #ActivityPub instance server written in C. It includes the following changes: Changed default: for newly created instances, disable_inbox_collection is set to true (see snac(8) for more information). The reason is because it seems to be used for harrasing people. Changed default: for newly created instances, disable_history is set to true (see snac(8) for more information). The reason is because archived history files don't reflect reality after posts are deleted or modified (they always have been an ugly kludge). Changed default: in previous versions, posts with a scope of unlisted were shown in public pages and RSS feeds. Now, they are no longer shown. If you want to get back to previous behaviour, use a new toggle in the User Settings section (see snac(1) for more information). New admin configuration option: if the purge_static value is set to true in server.json, each user's static directory is explored and those files there that are no longer attached to any post or referenced anywhere are deleted. See snac(8) for more information about those cases where you may not want to enable this option. Allow serving files from subdirectories of the static/ subdirectory (contributed by la_ninpre). Minor tweak to webfinger code to handle Hubzilla's peculiarities. Fixed a search case where URLs to GotoSocial statuses were misidentified as accounts. Accounts that follow you are now marked with a thumb-up emoji, because followers are adorable people. Fixed some account export errors. Fixed an incorrect hash in post links. Show an account's location link in the people page, if they have one. Mastodon API: Fixed hashtags loosing the link after editing a post, minor tweak in access token processing (contributed by trondd555). Drop usage of PATH_MAX (contributed by sergiodj). New Polish translation (contributed by kpm). Updated German and Czech translations (contributed by zen and pmjv). https://comam.es/what-is-snac If you find #snac useful, please consider buying grunfink a coffee or contributing via LiberaPay. #snacAnnounces #FrugalFediverse

I've just published version 2.93 of #snac, the simple, minimalistic #ActivityPub instance server written in C. It includes the following changes: Added a new admirations entry point to the web UI, containing a timeline of liked, boosted and reacted posts. Please take note that, after installing the new version, it will start empty, and be filled with subsequent reactions (contributed by violette). It's now possible to disable showing posts in a given set of languages. Nested quoted posts are limited up to 3 levels. New configuration knob: by setting keep_replies_posts to true in server.json, remote posts that a local user has replied to are retained in the public timeline, preventing them from being purged (contributed by hanchan). New configuration knob: by setting keep_replied_me to true in server.json, remote replies to local posts are retained in the public timeline, preventing them from being purged (contributed by hanchan). Ensure actors' public key PEM never includes anything after the end marker. Fixed some memory leaks (contributed by inz). Several additional keyId checks (many thanks to lainsoykaf for bringing this to my attention). Fixed crash in the JSON parser (many thanks to nullenvk for bringing this to my attention). Mastodon API: fixed lost custom emojis after edition (contributed by e0w0e). Updated French, Brazilian Portuguese, German, Spanish translations (contributed by dragondaddy, daltux, zen). https://comam.es/what-is-snac If you find #snac useful, please consider buying grunfink a coffee or contributing via LiberaPay. #snacAnnounces #FrugalFediverse

Amazingly, the amd64 #snac binary (stripped) and its source code still fits in a 1.2 MB floppy disk 🖬 $ ls -l total 920 -rwxr-x--- 1 grunfink src 607888 jul 25 13:42 snac -rw-r----- 1 grunfink src 330882 jul 25 13:43 snac-2.93.tar.gz

I've just published version 2.94 of #snac, the simple, minimalistic #ActivityPub instance server written in C. It includes the following changes (mostly bug fixes): The author of a replied post is no longer added to the CC: line, as it does not have much sense. Fixed mentions for users with hyphens in their identifiers. Unlisted replies to unknown posts were being skipped from the timeline, so don't do that. If an actor marked as broken gets a post boosted (proving that is [back] functioning), it's unmarked as such. Don't try (and fail) to parse non-UTC dates in posts (I'll provide a real fix eventually). Fixed a redirection loop in the /users alias. Mastodon API: fixed a bug that made changing the sensitive content string impossible, avatars and headers can be deleted (contributed by bm90). Updated Czech and Italian translations (contributed by pmjv and fidiben). https://comam.es/what-is-snac If you find #snac useful, please consider buying grunfink a coffee or contributing via LiberaPay. #snacAnnounces #FrugalFediverse

Hi everyone. Yesterday, many #snac instances had a failure in the notifications area: accessing it was impossible. I have not much information about what the problem is, but it seems it's related to a specially crafted post that makes snac hang. If this is happening to you, and you have access to snac's disk storage, you can delete manually the files inside the notify directory of your user (they are a bunch of .json files). Whenever I finally understand what is making snac fail, I'll publish a version that mitigates this. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Hi! I'm not totally sure because I haven't tested it (I no longer have the infrastructure), but I think that's not possible.

This is valuable, thanks for sharing. Also, I think it's important to remember that #snac also allows following hashtags by those RSS feeds provided by several Fediverse implementations (like Mastodon), avoiding the need of subscribing to a relay. E.g., you can add https://mastodon.social/tags/snac to the followed hashtags field, and it will periodically poll that RSS from the big instance and add to your timeline those posts tagged with #snac. If what 'split domains' mean is "running #snac in subdomain.example.com but identify as accounts from example.com" then no, it's not supported. But, you can have snac running from a subdirectory of your main domain (which, as far as I know, no other fediverse implementation does). I.e. you can have your snac root in example.com/social and then you can identify as you@example.com . So you have no unnecessary subdomain just to be you. Which is what I do for this very domain. Hi. After some incorrect user / password tries from a given IP, #snac bans it for a (configurable) amount of time. This is probably what has happened to you on your mobile.

Anyone can post anything to a person's inbox. However, #snac does a lot of checks to see if this post deserves to be here, e.g., if you are explicitly mentioned, if it's from someone you follow, if it's a reply to a conversation between people you follow, if it contains a hashtag you follow, etc. There are many more conditions. If none matches, the message is dropped with a log message similar to "post xxxx not for us". On the other, whenever a post from someone you follow gets in, snac tries to retrieve (following the inReplyTo fields chain) all the conversation up to the beginning to give you some context in the conversation. It may happen that, if that account you follow deletes their post, the replied post is left in your timeline, for no apparent reason.

Well, I started developing #snac in the Summer of 2022 (with previous experience) and I still find ActivityPub somewhat confusing 😉
