@jessamyn@glammr.us I liked LFP's AI flyers at the Radical Book Buzz. Looks like they're all available here under AI critical resources: https://libraryfreedom.org/resources/

For the first time since 2015, I’m on the open market, looking for my next gig!

Details in the post, but tl;dr, I’m taking on some short-term consulting gigs while exploring opportunities for a full-time role.

If you’ve ever wanted to work with me, or have been curious about what I’m actually good at, let’s talk.

If you have or know of something that might be a good fit, drop me an email or pass along my LinkedIn profile to anyone you think should know about me.

New rule: Wait at least three months after visiting a country before having that country's cuisine at a restaurant at home.

Brought to you by an underwhelming lunch at a decent NJ Spanish restaurant.

Too soon.

"It was 15 years ago, in March 2011, that HarperCollins first instituted its 26-lend 'metered' access model for library ebooks."

It's always been a challenge to bring someone up to speed on the problem with libraries and ebooks, and this is the thorough recap I've been waiting for! Who better to deliver it than Andrew Albanese?

"Spirit was not a niche carrier in the market. It was one of the airlines that helped keep fares competitive on routes used by vacationers, Puerto Rican families, business travelers, students, cruise passengers, and travelers heading beyond the capital to the island’s west and south coasts."

Even if you would never fly Spirit yourself, you probably benefited from their existence, especially if Puerto Rico was a primary destination for you. Ripple effects.

@mariyadelano I'm in the middle of evaluating Hubspot and told the rep to avoid mentioning any AI features. He stumbled at one point and I reminded him that pattern matching and automation are things Hubspot was good at long before everything had to be called AI.

"Many of these sales people haven’t done their research."

The only thing worse than edtech is edtech sales reps, especially the ones who are 10xing their spam with AI-powered marketing tools.

It's a plague in every industry, but edtech remains one of the biggest gold rushes, so the spamming will continue until sales improve.

It's not a perfect analogy, but there's definitely a parallel between the current AI hype and the "three cueing" approach to teaching reading.

I also wonder how many tech bros and AI grifters were "taught" to read that way?

At least two generations sacrificed to flawed educational theories and tech-driven experiments.

(PS: This whole series is great, but if you only have time for one episode, this is a good one that will hook you on the rest.)

The realization that everything you've documented while doing a job can be digested and repackaged by an AI tool to create "insights" "from" someone else was disturbing until I also realized that output has limited use without the experience and informed insights that created those original documents.

AI can't replace you, and someone using AI tools without your unique experience can't replace you, either.

Those who believe otherwise will eventually find out the hard way. 🤷🏽‍♂️

#FridayReads Thinking in Systems: A Primer by Donella H. Meadows is validating that systems thinking is how I typically view the world, but because I didn't have a formal understanding of it, it's making me realize why I sometimes have trouble communicating that approach to non-systems thinkers.

The murder board makes total sense to me, but it seems chaotic and tangential when I have to explain it to someone else! 😅

“This report offers a clear, data-informed picture of how digital reading is supporting instruction, choice, and access at a time when literacy outcomes are under increasing scrutiny.”

The Holy Trinity of Reading, although traditional ebook licensing means 2 out of 3 are an obstacle for schools and libraries to support equitably.

What's the nerdiest / nicheiest #podcast you listen to?

I could easily say WH40k Book Club or Strong Songs, but I think it's actually Look Both Ways with David & Wes. 🤓🚸

@katherine_montalto@zirk.us Migrated a while back; other than the links to everything being different, it's basically the same experience on the surface, minus the discomfort of directly supporting Bluesky. I didn't want a straight Twitter replacement, though, so Mastodon is still preferable for me.

@lrhodes@merveilles.town I was wondering that, too. I'm on Blacksky, and while I don't check in there regularly, I've been on a few times this morning and everything seems fine. I haven't seen anyone complaining, and 99% of my main feed is people on Bluesky itself.

@stefan@gardenstate.social Ah, okay; that's what I thought. I'm sure there are plenty of technical reasons it's complicated, but it'd definitely make the portability of a Fediverse account a lot more appealing. I might actually value it more than keeping my follows/followers.

@MarvinFreeman@mastodon.online I took the last four months off thanks to a combination of extreme Winter and stress, and every missed week made it easier to miss another week. And another. Didn't even use the treadmill. Finally got out there on Monday and pushed through a "not as easy as it should have been" run.
