“Windblown Trees at Loch Stack” — Two windswept trees backed by Loch Stack and Scottish highlands mountains.
The last few days of our drive around northwest Scotland followed an indirect route. After more or less tracing the North Coast 500 route from Skye toward Durness, our plans had us making a longish detour to the historic lodge at Altnaharra. This meant leaving the NC500 and heading south into the highlands on less-traveled roads. I made this photograph along the detour late in the day.

“Soft Light, Ellery Lake” — Ellery Lake in early morning soft light.
This spot and this view have long intrigued me. The lines and curves lead from the shoreline forest at left, past that talus-covered slope on the right, across the water to another peninsula, and finally to the massive face rising beyond. The personality of this view can change remarkably — I’ve photographed during storms, under the full moon, in direct sunlight.

“A Cotswolds Trail” — Two Cotswolds hikers pause in the sunlight between old trees and a wheat field.
I have to confess some (OK, a lot of) ignorance about England outside of its cities. We’ve been to the country a number of times, but that usually means going to London and then visiting a few other relatively urbanized places. So “my England” has been basically London and a few (mostly popular) towns. We’ve passed through the country on trains and looked down on it from the air, but this trip was the first time that we actually went out and walked through it. I learned a lot!

“Four Cotswolds Trees” — Large old trees stand in a Cotswolds field.
Near the end of May we did a one-week walk in England’s Cotswolds. Ours was not the most aggressive walk, and our mileage was shorter than it might have been on more aggressive walks. (Basically, we did an out-and-back loop starting and ending at Moreton-in-Marsh.) The plan was to enjoy the walking, but have plenty of time and energy to enjoy the towns we passed through and stayed in each night.

“Three Peaks, Rain Clouds” — Distant highlands peaks in light rain, beyond tree-covered hills.
Arriving at this spot involved one of those driving adventures that characterized much of our time in northwest Scotland. We were following a main road northward from Skye, and here we diverged to the west to get to the coast. As we topped this rise we looked back and saw this spectacular scene — spots of sunlight on nearby hills, light rain falling between us and three distant tall peaks, and a dramatic, cloud-filled sky.

A Doorway” — Decorated doorway in a stone building, Aberdeen, Scotland.
For some reason I can’t quite define, doors seem to be a popular photographic subject. Perhaps it is curiosity about what lies behind them — both the prospect of something being hidden and the notion of leaving one space and entering another. I often photograph them without quite knowing why, only intuiting that they appeal to me. Here I liked the contrast between the cold and angular nature of the stone structure and the the organic forms painted on the doorway.

“Chair, Steps, and Door” — A white chair on steps in front of a black door, Kirk of St. Nicholas, Aberdeen.
I look for a lot of different things when photographing in cities — people, architecture, color and texture, special light, places that characterize the area… and things that just seem a bit odd, out of place, and hard to explain. This photograph falls into the last category, though I also like the contrast between the pure white of the chair and the darkness and heaviness of the rest of the scene.

“Dublin Woman” — A Dublin woman in a hurry crosses a street.
Photographing people is not a major part of my photography, and when I do it is more often along the lines of people in their environment rather than portraits. But every so often the mood hits, and I do a series of such photos. It happened a bit during our May visit to Dublin — perhaps because it was such a busy, people-filled city. This is the first from that visit, but there will be more.

Soft Light, Ellery Lake

“Wildflowers, South Death Valley” — A flower-covered landscape with a hill and the lower panamint Range.
Is this a so-called “super bloom” year in Death Valley? The term seems subjective, and there does not seem to be a clear demarcation between a really great bloom (which this season is certainly providing) and a super bloom. From what we saw in late February, I think there’s a case for calling 2026 one of the exceptional super bloom years…more: https://gdanmitchell.com/2026/03/07/wildflowers-south-death-valley/

“Autumn Trees, Yosemite Valley” — Yosemite Valley trees with colorful autumn foliage.
This spot had some of the best autumn color I encountered on my end-of-October two-day photography visit to Yosemite Valley. In much of the Valley the colors of autumn are subtle — meadows with golden-brown grasses, riverside plants turning yellow, and in some places deciduous trees with fall foliage. But if you look closely you’ll see fall color almost everywhere in this scene, including at the base of the distant cliffs...continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2025/11/26/autumn-trees-yosemite-valley/
