Some personal/work news: I was laid off mid 2024 and took a sabbatical, which quickly turned into taking care of my pregnant partner (part time job) and then our twin babies (full time job ^^). How time flies! We also moved to Réunion recently.
I will be looking for remote work soon (timezone is UTC+2). I have close to 20 years experience in frontend/UI dev and associated skills (UX, full stack dev, e2e testing, wrangling developer tooling for entire teams, etc). If you have some remote and maybe even part time opportunities for me, don't be shy!
I know things are strange nowadays with projects vibecoding themselves into uncharted corners (while hoping it doesn't blow up in their faces). I'm still hopeful there's good work to be done.

I remember an article claiming that maybe ~15% of users used text selection as a reading aid in some tests (on desktop computers, might be lower on mobile). Can’t find a source right now, and would be happy for any link if someone knows.
I know that I do this, and have heard anecdotal evidence from others that they do it as well. I have ADHD and can easily lose track of what I’m reading, I can end up re-reading the same paragraph a few times, etc.
I also wonder if some people with dyslexia use text selection/highlighting as a digital equivalent of physical tools (reading rulers and color overlays).

@bitflipped @akareilly I tend to agree for single-author projects, but I think people in FOSS use this as an excuse for bad behavior and/or for dismissing accessibility.
There are plenty of NGOs where volunteers will be shown the door if they break the code of conduct or don't care about specific requirements. This view of volunteer work where you just do what you like is strangely specific to FOSS.

Bonus point for the Adobe one is that they seem to have published or circulated two different versions without incrementing the publication date or the spec’s version number.
So some people have a DNG 1.7.1.0 PDF that says “this is not allowed”, and others have one that say “this is allowed”.

The Child Monitor app on f-droid looks alright but it only supports Android, I'd need to use a laptop as a server or client (interchangeably).

Also I don't have a job currently, I'm busy full time with childcare and prepping our move abroad, and plan to look for a job or freelance contracts right after that.
I feel like trying out some AI coding tools is going to be a requirement in my job search, so not sure I have the luxury to have a strict "AI, not even once" policy.

Should it render a 10 MB PNG, a huge SVG with thousands of elements, a 50 MB PDF, a 100 MB audio file, a 200+ MB video? All these could be rendered server-side to some smaller preview.
But ultimately the support comes down to "do we already support the format anyway?" and/or "how much demand is there?" I remember when audio, video and PDF rendering were not the browser's problem and needed plugins or downloading a file to open it with other software; this changed because of demand, not because PDFs, AAC and say VP8 are magically tiny files smaller than a JPEG thumbnail.

@NatalyaD The text styles in the screenshot are alright, it's a subtle text-shadow effect used to reinforce contrast as seen in the first paragraph. The issue arises when the background color changes due to the selection.
The selection background color can vary wildly based on the OS, browser and user settings. I'm on macOS with a pink highlight color, this translates to a dark pink color for selections in Firefox, not sure what Safari does.
Theoretically one could do:

color: highlighttext;
}
But the highlighttext value didn't work correctly in my tests. I'll have to try more things and document what I find.

@gianni@disobey.net @wbrowar@hachyderm.io @nhoizey@mamot.fr Sure, but that's orthogonal to the codec. If you have a straight out of camera high quality lossy 60MP file, you probably want to display this smaller preview regardless of whether the full size image is JPEG, HEIC, JXL or AVIF.
