Tania Warner described the treatment of her and her daughter as “horrific” from the start. After being held for about five and a half hours at the checkpoint, they were sent to the first facility, where “every single person … was handcuffed – including children”, the mother said.

There, they slept on the floor on 2in mats and the lights were on 24 hours a day. Agents would not let Warner call a lawyer and constantly pressured her to sign documents agreeing to “self-deport”.

“They’re abusive, and their tactics are to threaten you and to be so inhospitable that you deport yourself,” Warner said. She and her family say she has made it clear they have all the correct documents to live and work in the US, but that has been ignored.

That logic turns out to be dangerously circular. [#Oil] Prices are low because investors expect #Trump to end the war before prices get too high; but because prices are low, Trump faces less pressure to end the war. In fact, the president seems to have figured out that he can calm the oil markets simply by gesturing at the prospect of a peace deal every so often. Of course, a peace deal or a new cease-fire could still be announced at any moment. But the dynamic between Trump and the markets—call it the #TACO equilibrium—is what has kept the war going longer than almost anyone expected.

Defeat in the present confrontation with Iran will be of an entirely different character. It can neither be repaired nor ignored. There will be no return to the status quo ante, no ultimate American triumph that will undo or overcome the harm done.

Netanyahu says airstrikes have destroyed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s compound and adds that “all indications show this tyrant is no longer with us”.

While not explicitly confirming Khameini’s death, this is strongest official indication yet that the missing leader is dead.

Khamenei has not been heard from since US-Israeli strikes began and satellite imagery has shown that his secure compound in #Tehran was heavily damaged in the initial barrage.

The world has always been run by rich men. The robber barons of the Gilded Age were known for their ruthlessness in the accumulation of wealth—hiring Pinkertons to shoot striking unionists. But they directly engaged with the world around them, using their wealth and power to muscle it into its most profitable form. And although today’s billionaires are clearly manipulating society to maximize their own profit, something else is also happening—a disassociation from the reality of cause and effect, from meaning and history. These men no longer feel the need to change the world in order to succeed, because their success is guaranteed, no matter what happens to the rest of us.

Many people in Iran are still sleeping or just waking up, but I have asked one person in Tehran about how they feel about #Khamenei’s death.

“I can’t believe it. It’s like when they give you such a good news that you don’t even don’t know what to do," they tell me.

"I couldn’t sleep all night, I’m just waiting to start the first day without Khamenei in it. I think the Middle East has become a better place.

"Even [the] world has become a better place now.”

They add to a growing body of evidence that the Iranian regime’s slaughter of unarmed protesters last month was not lawful policing of political unrest. It was a #massacre, and it should be treated as such.

Despite #Iran’s internet blackout, I regularly receive text and voice messages from within the country - people talking about life under attack. One was from a forty-something man, who sounded really low.

"I’m freaking out," he says. He describes seeing "a lot of fighter jets" and hearing "five or six explosions".

Although the war itself is in the headlines, "the people inside Iran have been forgotten", he says.

In his view, all the media talks about is what Trump has said and how Iran responded. "Even Iranians abroad are mostly either dancing and congratulating #Israel, the US, and #Trump, or tearing each other apart," he says.

Meanwhile, inside Iran, he is seeing people "nearly break from fear" at the sound of a door slamming. "When I call someone and they don’t answer, I almost have a heart attack," he says.
