I write and think about culture (for fun and to pay my rent). My obsessive interest is people and how we work, individually and collectively, which makes me interested in most things, with a particularly keen interest in cogsci and psychology (I grew up around medical science). I studied painting and drawing at uni and I used to play in bands and work in the music industry. Maybe I'll switch to using my real name here eventually.

@brianmerchant@mastodon.social They're like a rapist's relationship to the person they're raping, they hate artists but also envy and desire them. They artist/woman must be destroyed and broken so the rapist can deny their feelings of disempowerment and unworthiness in an orgy of violence that makes them feel powerful.

@kissane@mas.to I think there are a couple of things... Firstly, purity tests are an aspect of fascism, they're all about the individual subsuming and sacrificing themselves to an ideology or belief (usually that of the believer so it's making the other person subordinate and using the ideology as the lever to do so). It's not a coincidence that people who are judging others on these purist standards also see themselves as martyrs (and greatly underappreciated for their greatness). None of this is reasonable nor does it leave room for people to be human and imperfect. (We're all human and imperfect, even the people who believe themselves above all this.)

@georgetakei@universeodon.com Yeah, US election wins and losses are more about gerrymandering and your weird setup than they are about people voting for third parties. The US needs to stop pretending it's a real democracy and people need to stop blaming voters for the results of gerrymandering and stupid electoral colleges until these things are fixed. Bush won because of the electoral college. *This does not mean voting is useless and I'm not advocating for not voting, just that voting's not enough and the legal fights to protect voting rights are perhaps even more important to make voting more effective.
