In case anybody at all is wondering if I’m still alive or whatever, I am, I just haven’t felt like hopping on anything other than Discord, Matrix, IRC, and YouTube over the past while.

This is how it usually is, which is why I’ve been very infrequently active over here since day one.

@tizilogic@mastodon.gamedev.place @lina@vt.social I wonder how C compares to C++ in those regards 🤔

@tizilogic@mastodon.gamedev.place Fair. I was mainly asking because I don’t really have a proper frame of reference for C compile times. Like, I use Gentoo, but I don’t look into the build times of every single package on my system. There are some C++ packages that build in a few minutes, there are some C packages that are the same, and then there’s LLVM, which takes three to four hours to build a 32-bit and 64-bit version in one go (multilib package). Clang takes basically the same amount of time (multilib again) as well, whereas Rust only takes two and a half to three hours to build (multilib again). However, Rust packages often seem to take more memory to build at one point or another in the process than C++ packages seem to, almost certainly in part because of -C debuginfo=2 -C codegen-units=1, but NodeJS sure does its darndest to use all of my memory up as well during compilation. Oh, and the kernel, which is written in C — I haven’t enabled the Rust support yet, because of toolchain version stuff — can take up to an hour to fully build and install. In short, to me, besides some small differences in memory utilisation and such, they all seem to take a long time to build if the code bases are big and vice versa.
