@LucCogZest@fediscience.org I think perhaps there is an additional dimension. For artisanal software, our customer is the customer who is using our software. For BigCorp software, the customer is the VP of the division, angling for Senior VP.
Anyone know the origin of the term "computer language", the notion that the instructions to the computer are something akin to language?
Grace Hopper uses it in passing in 1952, but context suggests she expected this would be a familiar analogy.
My new, (highly!) experimental map view for Tinderbox (https://www.eastgate.com/Tinderbox/), a tool for thought.
You can drag things to new places, and some of the things attract other things. Lots of fun! (Also, quite a lot of complexity)
@antlers@oldbytes.space perfect! Thank you
Weirdness of reviewing a referee report that takes me to task for neglecting (checks notes) a topic on which I’ve been a leading contributor for 20+ years.
This is a problem with double-blind reviewing: it’s difficult at first glance to distinguish a decent modesty from ignorance.
I recall a previous review that noted the paper was kind of crazy, but the field has a history of craziness from such pioneers as ______ and Bernstein!
Tinderbox support headache of the day: a crash when pasting a passage in Manichean script, in use prior to the 12th century.
It’s always interesting! https://www.eastgate.com/Tinderbox/
@b0rk@social.jvns.ca Can’t wait. Is there a preorder URL or an announcement list? I need this zine.
@WiredItalia@flipboard.com @wireditalia@flipboard.com I had great fun with one of these, back in the day.
@zeldman@threads.net I’d love to pitch you on another ALA piece, and to inquire after the first. The email I used to use now bounces. Could you let me know, or ping bernstein@eastgate.com?
@ollicle@mastodon.social So it does! Yikes. I’m on it.
@jgordon@appdot.net @amoroso@fosstodon.org @judell@social.coop
I remember them well, too. I might have the same o’reilly book. Or perhaps you mean Computer Lib?
@GeePawHill@mastodon.social Selfridge. Gabriel. Aho & Ullman. Noble, Steele, Marshall. Ted Nelson. Engelbart. (Reluctantly but inevitably) Stallman.
Is it known whether or not Kurt Gödel spoke Yiddish?
@mxp@mastodon.acm.org for ACM hypertext
Is the limit for late-breaking papers 6 pages + refs, or 12?
Is there a good review article or textbook on digital simulation of paint.
I have a special mode of refactoring that I think of as “paranoid.”
On certain days of the year, reality fades to a thin scrim over primordial chaos. It is necessary to take very small steps.
Today, it seems, is one of those days.
@peterme@sfba.social @jarango@mastodon.social But don’t you want to BE the scout? That’s the fun part!
@quinn@social.circl.lu the reconstruction will be under Lapid or Gantz. So totally different.
Unless, that is, we convince Israeli voters that we’re duplicitous antisemites who cannot be trusted.
