You’re absolutely right — you are Pagliacci. It would certainly be difficult for you to attend your own performance! I should not have given such paradoxical advice, and I apologize deeply for the error. There is no excuse for my failure. Nevertheless, comedy is a powerful healing force. My recommendation is to seek out live entertainment. For example, great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up. 🔗 Sponsored Reply (Great Clown Productions, Ltd.)

Replacing a guy named Bovino with a guy named Homan sounds like a Far Side cartoon about cows doing a fascist takeover in gradually improving disguises

I asked Adobe Acrobat’s AI Assistant for help editing a Dungeons & Dragons character sheet. It didn’t know anything about Acrobat but it was happy to talk about D&D. Relatable!

@gadgetgav @jacob Home and Lock were at the top and bottom of the phone, so you could reasonably call them opposites. But I think he just misremembered the current button arrangement as the original.

@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social SwiftUI is the result of new people coming in and preferring to change existing systems to be more like what they find familiar (in this case from web development and React) than to learn them. The fact that SwiftUI controls are reimplemented from scratch rather than as a layer on top of the kits is revealing. Also that it trades away most benefits of the language’s extremely advanced type system while gaining no compilation speed or efficiency in return. What are we doing.

@aparrish I have a distant memory of someone saying LLM tools refused to work with their code because the subject matter didn’t pass mature content filters (I think there were anatomical terms in strings or variable names for some non-pornographic reason). Not sure if that’s still a thing that happens, but it wouldn’t surprise me.

@chockenberry While this is better, it still kinda sucks. Each of the other buttons in that row triggers an action and dismisses the sheet. That’s the expectation created by putting them together and making them all look the same. But if one is actually a UI disclosure control, it should have different affordances. Making it look like part of a set with the action buttons just because it happens to be near them is a confusing priority of symmetry over meaning.

So weird that an industry whose main product is a knowledge simulator would turn out to be led by morons https://www.404media.co/meta-director-of-ai-safety-allows-ai-agent-to-accidentally-delete-her-inbox/

@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social @marcoarment@mastodon.social Late to this, but I was just playing around with Godot (open-source game engine) and ran into a similar situation. Look how much better Godot handles it (I’ve just clicked Close, which is offered in addition to Cancel). This is not a difficult UI problem to solve.

@incanus @chockenberry It’s a junk drawer whose central organizing principle makes no sense (does any user understand, or need to understand, the differences between the types of actions?), which can be customized but not quite enough to make customizing it worth the trouble, and whose contents change without explanation in response to hidden information (what apps are installed and not offloaded and what type of data is being shared). It’s an unpredictable and unlearnable disaster.

@jwz @claudius @mathowie Hey this is fun: in your post from EIGHT YEARS AGO (bottom link) you say Signal claimed no one would be able to see your phone number who didn’t have it already, seemingly despite evidence.

Well, here they are in 2024: “Once these features roll out, your phone number will no longer be visible in Signal to anyone running the latest version of Signal who doesn’t already have it saved in their phone’s contacts.”

Keep your phone number private with Signal usernames

Signal’s mission and sole focus is private communication. For years, Signal has kept your messages private, your profile information (like your name and profile photo) private, your contacts private, and your groups private – among much else. Now we’re taking that one step further, by making your...

@lina@vt.social Might it be possible to include a few decoy flags that can’t be found by completing the challenge as intended, but that an LLM would notice and pattern-match on? And then you can disqualify any team submitting a decoy flag?
