A CMO told me connecting a new DAM to her websites was quoted at ~$100K and three months. The reason? Three CMS platforms meant three integrations. That's the hidden cost of CMS fragmentation, and why more orgs are standardizing on Drupal: https://dri.es/the-cost-of-running-multiple-cms-platforms

Europe needs digital sovereignty, and Open Source is the most direct path to it. But it requires more contribution-based procurement. More public money must flow upstream to Open Source maintainers, not just to integrators and resellers.

Some Open Source is simply shared. Some is stewarded as infrastructure. Naming the difference changes the conversation.

I'm excited to share an experiment I've been working on: a solar-powered, self-hosted website running on a Raspberry Pi. The goal was to use the smallest, most energy-efficient setup possible, even if it means the website goes offline sometimes. Yes, this site may go down on cloudy or cold days. But don't worry! When the sun comes out, the website will be back up, powered by sunshine. https://dri.es/my-solar-powered-and-self-hosted-website

The EU's sovereignty framework scores Open Source at roughly 4%. It should be a prerequisite, not a rounding error. https://dri.es/the-sovereignty-prerequisite #OpenSource #DigitalSovereignty
Drupal turns 25 today. A quarter of a century. I captured 25 lessons from the journey. https://dri.es/25-years-of-drupal-what-i-have-learned #foss #opensource #web
I added Agentic Resource Discovery (ARD) to my website, giving AI agents another way to discover its search API. https://dri.es/helping-agents-discover-my-site-search-with-agentic-resource-discovery
AI is not killing the CMS. It is unbundling creation from control. That may replace the CMS for simple publishing, but it makes the CMS more important wherever content is shared, reused, approved, or trusted across systems. https://dri.es/ai-and-the-great-cms-unbundling #cms
Open source software is free to download. But the infrastructure behind it is not. Most Open Source projects are funded through a fragile mix of donations and goodwill. Open Source infrastructure deserves a business model! https://dri.es/open-source-infrastructure-deserves-a-business-model
"Anyone can contribute" is not the same as "everyone has the same opportunity to contribute". AI could reduce the privilege of free time in Open Source, but only if access and skill become shared, not private advantages. I wrote about it in https://dri.es/the-privilege-of-ai-in-open-source #opensource #ai
Drupal turned 25 this year. We're celebrating at DrupalCon Chicago with a 25th Anniversary Gala. This is a separate ticketed event, and ticket sales close March 18. Come celebrate with us! https://dri.es/drupal-25th-anniversary-gala-at-drupalcon-chicago
Drupal's reputation has not kept up with what the platform has become. https://dri.es/the-gap-between-drupal-and-its-reputation
AI is changing how code gets written, but it shouldn’t change the responsibility that comes with contributing Open Source code. https://dri.es/never-submit-code-you-do-not-understand

Drupal's future in AI workflows is both inside and outside the CMS: supporting Drupal-native workflows, external orchestration, and the trusted handoffs between them. https://dri.es/drupal-role-in-agentic-workflows
AI agents do not always choose the best software. They choose the path they can complete with the least effort. That gives open source an edge, but only if projects are easy to install, inspect, modify, and verify. New post: https://dri.es/friction-abstraction-and-verification
This morning I made a small change to my site: I made every page available as Markdown for AI agents and crawlers. I expected maybe a trickle. Within an hour, I was seeing hundreds of requests from ClaudeBot, GPTBot, and OpenAI’s SearchBot. 😲 https://dri.es/the-third-audience-is-ai
Business logic is moving out of individual applications and into the orchestration layer. Your marketing stack is becoming a marketing network. I call this the Orchestration Shift, and I think it might reshape enterprise software architecture. https://dri.es/the-orchestration-shift
The Open Web was built on a fair exchange: content in return for visitors. AI broke that deal. We need new systems to support creators, not leave them behind. My thoughts on the forward: https://dri.es/the-webs-broken-deal-with-ai-companies /cc @cloudflare@noc.social #openweb #ai
Exciting news: Drupal CMS 1.0 officially launched today — right on schedule, just as we promised 8 months ago! It took a lot from so many people, but I'm thrilled we made it happen. 🙏
In my blog post, I not only explain what Drupal CMS 1.0 is but also share my personal perspective on what makes this release special, the journey behind its development, and what is next.
Oh, and to top it off — it's Drupal's 24th birthday today. 🎉 https://dri.es/drupal-cms-1-released
I just shared my State of Drupal presentation from DrupalCon Atlanta! Get an update on Drupal CMS 1.0's launch and what is next: Experience Builder, AI agents, Site Templates, and a potential marketplace. Watch the keynote or download my slides. https://dri.es/state-of-drupal-presentation-march-2025 #drupal #drupalcon #ai #xb

AI is changing the digital agency model. Here is how and why it matters: https://dri.es/ai-and-the-great-digital-agency-unbundling
I tested 12 LLMs to auto-generate alt-text for 9,000 images missing descriptions on my website. Not surprisingly, cloud models (GPT-4, Claude 3.5) performed best but weren't perfect. For local options, Llama variants and MiniCPM-V worked reliably but missed some details. Local models align with my values, but cloud models would serve visually impaired users better. Should I prioritize principles or pragmatic accessibility? https://dri.es/generating-image-descriptions-and-alt-text-with-ai
A few weeks ago, I started exploring how AI can improve alt-text for images on my website. What seemed like a simple fix turned into a multi-step challenge. In my latest post, I share how I'm scaling this process to handle 9,000 images while keeping some control over quality. https://dri.es/automating-alt-text-generation-ai
It's mind-blowing to watch AI agents *use a browser* to seamlessly browse your site and edit content. 🤯 https://dri.es/i-gave-an-ai-agent-edit-access-to-my-website
When AI causes harm, responsibility should follow meaningful control. Model creators control training and release, product builders control permissions and deployment, and users control deliberate misuse. https://dri.es/responsibility-follows-control
I added /.well-known/api-catalog support to my site so AI agents could discover my site's search. Zero found it on their own, but an Agent Skill closed the gap: https://dri.es/helping-agents-discover-my-site-search-with-an-api-catalog
