@distrowatch I’m still waiting on the web3 blockchain-enhanced LLM powered Distrowatch app for the Apple Vision Pro. Don’t miss the boat! 😆 (You’re absolutely right - my wife is a web developer and we were just talking the other day about how too many developers jump onboard the shiny-train without giving any thought to whether it’s a good idea to actually useful)

And there you have it: Meta's been funding the age verification push for OSes

Reddit User Uncovers Who Is Behind Meta’s $2B Lobbying for Invasive Age Verification Tech

Meta funneled $2B through nonprofit shells to push age verification laws targeting Apple and Google while exempting its own platforms from surveillance requirements.

@samueljohnson@mstdn.social @fastmail@mastodon.social in the same boat here. Canadian and have used Fastmail for years. But seriously considering alternatives given their current hosting situation.

@dianna@mas.to #welcome! You’ll get the hang of it in a couple days. It’s really not all that different than Twitter (in terms of basic mechanics anyhow)

Two big items to note:

  1. There’s no “engagement algorithm” here. Your feed only shows you posts from people you follow and posts they’ve “boosted” (retweeted)! So if it seems quiet, follow more people!

  2. There’s also no full-text search across all of Mastodon (intentionally). Hashtags are how we find stuff. So use them liberally!

@Ciaraioch@mastodon.ie Don’t knock the power of the Pringle. If my wife had thought to offer me a can of Pringles on the first date, I’d have known that she was The One right then and there.

My German friend and his partner are visiting Canada. He’s lived here before, and this was her first visit. Her English is better than my German - as a teenager I picked up just enough German to understand README.txt files from Commodore Amiga software from Germany.

“Bitte legen Sie die diskette ein!” isn’t exactly conversational German, but it did elicit a few laughs.

(I did make sure to properly thank them for their visit in German later though!)

@gumnos I experienced a variant of that just last week. Out of nowhere I suddenly began typing a really old password (haven’t used it in at least a decade, if not longer) into all kinds of password prompts. No idea why. Just realized that a recently-generated work password begins with the same 2 characters as my ancient one. And apparently now my muscle memory thinks ALL passwords are the ancient one 😆

I am staying up wayyy too late, playing video games (Halo Infinite, if you must know). I do this every now and then. I also always regret it the day later as my old gnarled sysadmin fingers don't like playing FPSes much these days. Yes, I will regret this tomorrow.

But my opponents... my opponents will regret it before I do. 😈

@dianna@mas.to are you using the mobile app then? You might want to look at one of the 3rd party ones (Metatext on iOS, Tusky on Android, and there are others too). They've been around longer than the official Mastodon apps, and are more full-featured.

@Ciaraioch@mastodon.ie forget the various online services. Low barrier to entry = too much cruft to sift through. I know this sounds old school, and it is. Literally. Take a class somewhere, (in person!) about a topic you’re interested in & interact with the people in the class. It’s a great way to filter for common interests. And even if you don’t meet somebody you won’t have wasted your time (as long as you picked an interesting class/course).
