What's the etiquette on topic relevance for an instance like hci.social? Are people going to, like, live-toot Andor tomorrow? What about games-y stuff?

I feel like giving up algorithmic feeds is one of those moments like outlawing AI in Dune or giving up networked computers in Battlestar -- we're going to have to decide as a society to do it. It's not an experience that wins on its merits.
I'm motivated by ideology to be here, but it doesn't seem to me to be a more accessible, more safe, more expressive environment. Absent ideology, what's the reason to prefer it?
@darius@friend.camp oh that’s a nice model! I haven’t yet internalized the visibility options or how others use the service. IE is local timeline drawing much attention? I personally glance at it but mostly use following. Hmm.
@AnokheeTara@ohai.social right, that’s why I’m precise about saying people retain. Not that a majority say they like it better. What people say does not drive decisions at tech companies. I would know. 😏
@andresmh@hci.social @schock@mastodon.lol @nancybaym@mastodon.social could be. I wonder what your experience is with the other overhead of the instance? Technical maintenance, financial costs, legal risks. Do you worry about, say, DMCA reporting? Do you have an LLC set up? That looms large in my head as part of what will pressure instances to grow to make those costs feel "worth it" which would be in tension with moderation complexity and volume that also comes w/ growth.
@andresmh@hci.social @schock@mastodon.lol @nancybaym@mastodon.social one reductionist way to frame this: how does moderation cost (in hours) scale with instance size? If it’s linear or sub-linear, it will tend to concentrate users and costs on big instances. Super linear and it will inhibit centralization.
My gut is moderation scales super linear, but there is so many other overhead costs (dmca, tech, law enforcement response, raising money, etc) that the trends are overall more towards centralization.
@AnokheeTara@ohai.social especially bad at predicting product behavior. Preferences imo are complex. I can reflect very deep preferences about, say, video game genres I like that are accurate to my play patterns. But not in all domains.
