A smol blog post about writing assertions in #rstats data pipelines. It's not the sexiest topic in the world, but oh my have I learned the hard way that it's an important one

@milesmcbain@fosstodon.org Ha! I seriously considered discussing testthat as a tool for assertions in this post, but then decided that life is short and I wanted to get to assertr before I lost my will to live 🫠
Too. Many. Tools.

@jimgar@fosstodon.org Huh. I’ve been using stopifnot() for years and never realised I could do that! Okay I’ll update the post to reflect that - thanks!

@brianrepko@hachyderm.io I really should take a look at it sometime. It’s a bit of a shame that the post isn’t more comprehensive, but I just ran out of time and energy

@modrak_m@fediscience.org Lovely post, and I totally agree! As it happens - though my post doesn’t go there explicitly - part of my motivation for setting aside some time to look into assertions for data pipelines came from looking at analysis scripts that use joins (in an oddball indirect way, because in real life analysts do things in an ad hoc way) and thinking about how I wanted to write safer code for that sort of thing. Analysis code requires a subtly different toolkit to dev code, I’m realising

@ihaddadenfodil@mastodon.social I mention it in the footnotes. It's not discussed because I haven't used it yet and so don't have any opinions

@ihaddadenfodil@mastodon.social I admit it does look rather nice. One day I'd like to set time aside to learn it!
