@benjamingeer@piaille.fr For what it’s worth, at least for my team we deliberately pick problems that are a) representative of the type of thing we solve in real life, and b) that hopefully the candidate has never seen before. The interviews are long enough to see how quickly they learn. Normally at the end of the interview that are moving much faster than at the start and that is the signal we are looking for.

@AmenZwa @cstross I had the privilege of working at the desk next to Fabrice for a few years. The experience changed how I go about working with large code bases that I don’t know. Fabric would remind me that it was just a computer, and they always do as instructed, you just have to learn how to crack open the black box of states you don’t understand. Basically, don’t give in when faced with a huge system, it probably isn’t as hard to understand as it feels. That insight has been invaluable to me in my subsequent career. In addition to his technical genius, he’s also legitimately a nice guy that takes time to teach junior devs, without ego.
