Reading @lcamtuf@infosec.exchange's book got me back in the lab doing experiments to measure the speed a signal travels through a 100-ft coaxial cable. In this low-quality setup with a 47-ohm resistor on a breadboard, I got 203.2 x 10^6 m/s, or about 68% of the speed of light. In a better setup using a proper 50-ohm BNC impedance adapter, I got 229.2 x 10^6 m/s, or about 76% of the speed of light. #electronics

This air quality sensor breakout board from Adafruit just measured the PM 2.5 AQI as 59 outside my front door (which isn't that great), but it matches exactly what AirNow.gov is currently reporting.

The AirNow.gov numbers are based on multiple sensors and modeling, so I really had no idea how close they would be.

Now I have to figure out a way to use the board that doesn't require taking my laptop outside.

@aeischeid@mastodon.social Should be doable. For example, https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=co2

Hold on. I just realized the blue trace must be measuring something else. (Pulling the anode of the IR LED low is the opposite what we want to do to transmit.) I'll update this when I have time to figure out what I was really doing, which unfortunately won't be right away. Stay tuned.

Update: the blue trace is actually the output of the IR Receiver in the same circuit, captured when the circuit was transmitting. That make a lot more sense. (I had moved the probe hours earlier and apparently forgot.)

RE: @sticklandtim@mastodon.green

What a legacy indeed.

I've used Jeff's run-walk-run method for more than a decade, even in races. It changed my life.

@christine@ruby.social I find Julia works pretty well for these problems. :julia:
