I feel it's understated how hobbyist gamedevs *must* be targeting WASM. The current off the shelf game engines like Godot, Unity and Unreal all focus on more modern graphics APIs. They offer GLES option, but they call it "legacy". WebGL2 is not legacy. It is a current and supported standard in all browsers. WebGPU does not formally replace WebGL2 and WebGPU is still poorly supported. The primary graphics API target for a hobbyist gamedev should be WebGL2/OpenGL ES3. What's the point of Vulkan when no one is going to bother to download your sketchy binary? There's a gap in the market for a WASM-first game engine.
