@ottaross@mastodon.social @TrueNorthSpice@mastodon.world @mariellequinton@ottawa.place it's also partially about durability. Glass is obviously more fragile.

It's once again time for a new #introduction Hi! I'm Crabbypup, or just 'crabby', though only in name. I'm in Kitchener-Waterloo, and I'm a linux-flavoured computer toucher. I share stuff about the region, Open source software in general and #linux in specific. I like to tinker in my #homelab, where I run #proxmox, #ceph, and a bunch of other #selfhosted services including #homeassistant. I'm a rather inconsistent poster, and a prolific booster, but I'm glad to be here.

@TrueNorthSpice@mastodon.world @ottaross@mastodon.social @mariellequinton@ottawa.place It's possible that the issues I (and others) were seeing were related to cheaper, lower quality glass making it into the marketplace in the last 10-15 years. I know there were lots of issues with Chinese manufactured 5-6 gallon glass carboys having their bottoms detach/crack, so could be a similar story.

@TrueNorthSpice@mastodon.world @ottaross@mastodon.social @mariellequinton@ottawa.place I used to home brew beer and hard cider. I have broken bottles during bottling. I have broken bottles during carbonation. There are many stories about homebrewers shipping bottles to other homebrewers or reviewers and ending up with a soggy box full of glass fragments at the end. I would be very interested to see what the in-transit breakage rate is for commercial breweries, because I doubt that it's zero.

Good morning #homelab and #selfhosted peeps! I'm doing the big two step #proxmox cluster upgrade today, going from pve 8.3 to 8.4, then 9.2. I already did the ceph cluster upgrade to Squid a few weeks ago. I had stayed on 8.3 because there were known performance regressions with the newer kernels that specifically impacted performance and stability of my workstation, which uses pcie passthrough for the GPU and USB controller. First host complete for stage 1, 3 more to go.

@david_chisnall@infosec.exchange I switched basically full time to Linux in 2008, after vista blew up two months in a row and I'd spent time rebuilding my install. But I'd already been using only open source cross platform available tools on windows for several years at that point. Before windows XP, all our machines ran OS/2, with star office on them - so openoffice and later libreoffice was something I was already comfortable with.

@sarahjamielewis@mastodon.social Fundamentally, it's not unlike what happened when CentOS stream happened and a bunch of CentOS community projects started working together to ensure they had access to the base RPM packages so they would be able to continue existing. And probably a similar amount of work.

@EdwinG@mstdn.moimeme.ca Those services have never worked for me. Not the TTC one, not the GRT one. The Google maps transit thing was usually pretty reliable for the most part on both systems.
