@hayzam@mastodon.bsd.cafe My last hardware purchase was a reconditioned EliteDesk, now happily running Debian Linux. Reconditioned computers make a lot of sense, as you can get high end hardware for about a third the price as new - also keeping good things out of landfill.

@Mabande Keep 1 or 2 of those in case you need to take a load of garden waste down to the tip. Or you may take up cider making and decide to buy apples straight from the orchard, in which case one of those full of apples will give you a year's supply of cider when crushed, pressed, put into fermenters and allowed to do its thing.

@neil@mastodon.neilzone.co.uk You don't need to cook to a very high standard for it to be healthier for your body and finances to be able to cook for yourself and loved ones than having all your food cooked for you. The more you do this the better you will get, I've been cooking for 60 years and am still learning new things.

@neil@mastodon.neilzone.co.uk I'm old enough to know. In my early childhood my dad was hacking student registrations at Leeds University using a valve computer that filled an old chapel. He cut the cost of major print runs by modem connecting the UCCA (later UCAS) Cheltenham mainframe to mainframes at largest UK Universities in the early seventies, in the late seventies providing videotex information to schools over Prestel.

@finlaydag33k Any general purpose computer with 2 or more network devices can be configured as a router. Linux is very good at this job. I did this in the late nineties when coax cable broadband only supported a single network connected device, and things have improved much since then. I've played around with a Busybox matchbox sized personal VPN router more recently.

@makeworld@merveilles.town "Christians don't think for themselves. They just do what they're told." "Christians keep thinking for themselves, creating new denominations whenever they do." From the perspective of chaordic organisation, dynamic restructuring capability is an organisational strength, not a weakness. "Chaord - (kay'ord) 1: any autocatalytic, self-regulating, adaptive, nonlinear, complex organism, organization, or system, whether physical, biological or social, the behavior of which harmoniously exhibits characteristics of both order and chaos. 2: an entity whose behavior exhibits patterns and probabilities not governed or explained by the behavior of its parts." https://managingresearchlibrary.org/glossary/chaordic-organization

@axbom Technically this data is "anonymised" before being sold on. But the more fine grained it is, the more valuable it is in the data market and the easier it becomes to de-anonymise it.

@faithisleaping@anarres.family Freedom of speech is never absolute. Adverts for accommodation discriminating against races and nationalities were common in the UK of my childhood. These signs weren't "free speech" though racists claimed they were. Such expressions were adversely affecting the safety needs of marginalised people, and so rebalancing was required on that one. Same goes for hate speech and incitement. Where the boundary lies will change with time, as our history tells us, and the boundary will always be contested when it does change.
