This ASUS Chromebook's updates ended in 2022, so I removed the screw that write protects the BIOS, followed the Mr Chromebox steps to install Coreboot on it, then I installed Debian + XFCE... It took just over 4GB of the 16GB m.2 2242 SSD.

It is AI slop to partly solve a problem. Laptop Keyboards were not getting tested (my fault as our checklist only has so much space on the double-side printed page), so I gamified it a bit (this will eventually be scripted into our post-install script). Lots of debugging to fix issues that were not present on the development machine: https://chaslinux.com/posts/keyboard_tests_gamified_keyboard_novelist/

Keyboard tests gamified - Keyboard Novelist

Part of Computer Recycling’s build workflow process can be found in the LibreOffice Writer Laptop Build Checklist on GitHub. This isn’t the entire process, but serves as a guide for new volunteers on things that we check, test, and do, to prepare a laptop with Linux Mint (currently 22.3). We also have some quality assurance steps that are not documented in that checklist, as we prefer to have several eyes on 1 build, in order to ensure we don’t miss things.

New project: trying Kazeta https://kazeta.org/ on a Dell Optiplex 3050 TFF PC. I installed kazeta to the NVMe in the system, then created a USB drive with the unpacked AppImage of Sumash (the Shamus-like game I made with GameMaker for a game jam). The system boots to the NVMe, then looks for any drives with .kzi files (ideally SD cards, but a USB key worked). It booted right into my game. Pretty awesome stuff. Now I just need to start making games for Linux again.

@codemonkeymike Does removing the BIOS security screw get around this? I've installed Debian on some Chromebooks, but I suspect they were already released from any corporate locks.

@codemonkeymike thanks, that confirms what I thought, the org de- registered everything before they gave it to us. We had the same issue with a huge dump of iPads years ago.

@matthew@social.retroedge.tech I've never tested the minimum specs of my game, but I don't expect it's very demanding. I'm going to try on an even lower spec modded Chromebox as I'm thinking my game could run on it. But yeah, I think the warning is more for games requiring more than Intel graphics.

This SSD was pulled from a recent donation to be wiped. It showed up in Parted Magic as a Samsung EVO 960 (not 870). When I went to wipe it (normally less than 2 minutes), Parted Magic indicated it was going to take over 65,000 minutes to wipe! It turns out it's a fake drive, made to look like a Samsung drive. I had a bunch of other Samsung SSDs wiping with it and yes, they all look different. This one isn't labeled Samsung anywhere (nothing on the bottom - though it looks like someone removed a sticker), but someone's gone to some length to make it look similar enough that you might miss it at first glance. Caught by software!

@mwichary this reminds me of Pentium II era HP motherboards when HP had diagonal RAM slots, an motherboards etched with all kinds of fun characters (yes, this is older, but seeing those ports reminded me of those bizarre #HP motherboards).

My better half and I were at our friend's place last weekend and they asked me about recovering a bitlockered drive. It's been years since I've spent time using Windows, but when I read the bitlocker text it mentioned turning on Secure Boot. I checked the UEFI and sure enough Secure Boot was off. Turning it on resulted in the system booting normally. They logged in and were as happy as punch. Sometimes the answer is staring you in the face, but if you don't know what to look for, or just gloss over it, it looks harder than it is... Grateful for simple fixes.

@Edent@mastodon.social have you found something else (asking because I'd like to move away from Discord) that's much better? They all seem to have privacy or Bug issues...

@psa@masto.ai @Edent@mastodon.social Thanks both of you, I'll look into both, though I know our parent org uses Signal a bit, so likely looking at Signal first. Love having options though.

@matthew@social.retroedge.tech I loved by playing Shamus on the c64... I'm most proud of Sumash as it was the first game I coded with the idea in mind, (vs basing it on existing GameMaker code - and I used the Linux version of GameMaker, Aseprite, and other tools to make it). Sort of a proof of concept that you could make a game in Linux. Of course using Godot would have been more ideal, but I knew GameMaker GML so it was just easier to do.
