Morning fedi. I kept messing with my instance the past week, was in that geeky mood. Now my entire domain is transferred to Cloudflare including the DNS records and acting as a proxy for my instance. I tested a little more with the relay functionality too, relay.infosec.exchange is just way too sensitive to any kind of service interruption so I had to abandon it, it kept dropping my instance. I kept rel.re which seems to be reliable and added relay.toot.io . My journey in the #fediverse continues! #relay #GoToSocial #admin

Instance back online after a power outage dropped a circuit breaker while I was away on vacation, causing my home server to go offline for almost 10 days. 😭

Good morning #fedi. Back to the usual routine now, catching up on my #StarTrek episodes while I'm having my morning coffee.

@elena@aseachange.com I haven't followed this topic from the start but I have a simple question: why were these networks created in the first place? To replace what? Bluesky was supposed to be a Twitter replacement (or wannabe...), these are replacements for what exactly? And why would anyone want to switch to these networks?

@gettie@fedi.catto.garden hard to answer that lately. Since I left I'm mostly treating it as a vacation spot, but even for that it's becoming more and more expensive and inhospitable.

@gettie@fedi.catto.garden then grab the opportunity when you see it. Just don't fall for the usual traps and pitfalls. You're still young but time flies...

@gettie@fedi.catto.garden well that's up to you. I guess I care more about content as I don't have much time for interactions anymore, so I need to see something useful when I open my fedi client for a glance. As for Cloudflare, I just use their free plan and it's convenient for me, it makes my server appear to others with the same IP. I don't use a VPS, just my home server and that's subject to IP changes. Also it is very possible in the future I'll end up behind a cgnat connection and Cloudflare can bypass that problem easily.

@gettie@fedi.catto.garden maybe you'll make it out eventually. I left a lot older and I have family and ownership ties to it that I can't just delete from my life so easily. And that's even more so for my life partner, so you see...

@gettie@fedi.catto.garden Small instances have no other way to discover content. Also it makes hashtag following much easier and the search function is actually usable. Cloudflare has some nice features aside from the proxying which you can turn off like adding DNSsec protection to the domain and http/3 support, although these are mostly irrelevant to the #fediverse which uses http/1.1 in its majority.

@gettie@fedi.catto.garden especially certain Greek ones. Luckily I'm on the largest German one currently and it still gives me a proper dual stack connection but there's no guarantee that'll last forever. So I'm keeping my options open with alternative solutions already on the standby.

@gettie@fedi.catto.garden guaranteed by whom? @elena@aseachange.com

@foufoutos@kafeneio.social όχι και οι καλύτερες μου αλλά εντάξει
