It's a portal into a wonderland of retro-inspired gear, all in Reason. Sweden's own Erik Karl Stephan Söderberg built EKSS as a one-man passion project, building Rack Extensions that ooze personality—that boutique hardware feeling, but all in the box. Come with me down the rabbit hole, including Erik's fantastic new FreakShift effect and drum step-sequencer.

D16 PunchBox 2 is a surprisingly deep sequel to the brutal kick plug-in classic - CDM Create Digital Music

D16's kick plug-in PunchBox was already a legendary drum weapons development laboratory, full of layers of crunchy, cruel, wonderful sounds. The Polish developer isn't messing with that formula, but they've packed more than just a few extras into the long-awaited V2 update. It's just in time for us to work out any aggression with kicks.

iZotope is now joining founder-owned AV software house Boris FX - CDM Create Digital Music

iZotope is now coming to rest post-Native Instruments as the music software maker is acquired by Boris FX. And when they say founder-owned, they mean it: the guy's name is actually Boris (Yamnitsky). The pairing frankly makes more sense than either NI/Soundwide or inMusic. It makes Boris FX the most interesting software house to watch right now. Here's why.

POST playlist: a mix of new music for sleepless nights - CDM Create Digital Music

For my semi-regular program POST for Refuge Worldwide this week, I focused on new releases. This highlighted Lebanon in particular and still didn't cover the flurry of releases there, but it covered other places, too. It's all recommended, so here's the full playback and track listing with links.

Stretch keys - Novation rounds out the MK4 Launchkey range with 88 keys - CDM Create Digital Music

Novation's Launchkey remains a go-to, no-hassle standard for MIDI controllers. Now they've rounded out their MK4 lineup with an 88-key model that adds the extra octaves without the weight or bulk that usually entails. They opted for semi-weighted keys to keep from bulking up.) It's the compact MK4, all stretched out. Here's the latest on the full MK4 lineup.

Here's another live visual icon with some welcome updates. Vidvox promised lots of quality-of-life refinements with VDMX6 as a platform, and VDMX6.3 adds just that. So it's a good excuse to mention VDMX again, in case you'd tuned out for a bit.

West Coast, with penguins: Aaltoverb on Linux; Aalto 2 coming soon - CDM Create Digital Music

Madrona Labs' patchable West Coast synth is one of the most playable, exploration-friendly, unique instruments around -- a piece of software to last. And it comes with a reverb companion, now on Linux, too as a free demo you can beta-test. The big news: Aalto 2 is coming this fall for macOS, Windows -- and Linux, too.
