@rasterweb in the Northern Territory of Australia, where the population is about 30% Aboriginal, ‘ol matey’ is the default way to refer to a (male) person . And ever since a grey-haired Aboriginal man hailed me (a younger person, though not young) with ‘Ay, ol lady!’ I hear ‘old’ and hear respect – which is as it should be.
