The octopus was so fixated on its hunt that my intrusive thoughts failed to disturb as it poke, probed and panhandled its way around a chunk of rubble, invading every crack and crevice, turning pale with every touch of a tasty treat and spreading its membrane to form a fleshy trap. I did not linger to see if it broke its fast, for the reef was ticking and room was running out to chart this stretch of a strait that teeters between the devel and a deep blue 死.
The tide started to pour in after two hours of exposure at Terumbu Raya. And with the waters came the stingrays and sharks, the former splashing over the shoals in their rush to enter deeper pools, and the latter more leisurely, with few signs of their arrival but a fin or two, piercing the surface and circling back and around the outcrops of sponges and sargassum, ready to reclaim the reef from deadlier bipedal beasts and the whispered threats of arrested development.

How do you break out of this vicious (bye)cycle whereby the ability to focus and get something done comes only after a bout of hyperactivity that generates just enough joy juice to make it to the next milestone before the need for another chug of heavy fuel? In other words, you can't fix things until you've had your fix, but what you need to fix is keeping you from the fix that'd fix the fix.

You also can't read a snake like do you a (n)typical human – it's the body, not face, that speaks its mind & shows its state of being: always alert, always coiled to fight or flee, almost never willing to give away its true sentiments but in the safest of spaces.
