Brief Ecology
mastodon 4.7.3-stable+ff1Monthly magazine publishing ecological news, essays, reviews, and fiction for a more ecological society | Edited by @benlockwood@ecoevo.social | 100% reader-funded | Human writing for human reading
More scientific research is published now than at any previous point in history, and yet the majority of it never makes its way to the general public. This is only getting worse now that the billionaires have completely taken over legacy media. Brief Ecology is an attempt to improve this situation, by focusing on recent environmental research and its broader societal significance.
Our August story in The Rotting Leaf is now live!
"No one will help Carcass. No one will come save her. She yearns to swaddle herself in her decomposing intestines, protection against the world, against Vulture, yet she can’t move."

"In short, we are facing a planetary crisis. Which is to say that the ecological systems of planet Earth that allow humanity to survive are breaking down. Not only is the ruling class ignoring the issue, but they are also lying to us about it".
- Our editor, Ben Lockwood, in Unsustainable Lies of the Ruling Class

We all know the problems. Fossil fuel emissions are rapidly driving the global climate past functional thresholds. Habitat loss and degradation are dragging global biodiversity down to critical levels. And capitalism is accelerating both processes while exploiting the mass of humanity. The question is what can we do about it? That’s what Brief Ecology is all about.

RE: @briefecology@climatejustice.social
“Published by Pluto Press, the book explores the theory, practice, and necessity of organizing economic production around societal and planetary care rather than profit. In doing so, Satgar and Williams provide a powerful and inspirational look into some of the tools we can use to exit the destructive logic of capitalism.”

“Just as taking a hike reminds you of the three-dimensionality of life outside the flat plane of your phone screen, good ecofiction reminds us of our place in this broad and bustling world.”

"I have a waterskin at hand, and strip down naked, feeling the uncomfortable pulse of my bladder. I bear my skin to the moonlight, hoping it will be tempting enough, dreading it will be too tempting."

Have you seen the houses growing in the forest? Have you looked inside them? Gaze into the unknown with this eerie piece of ecofiction from Tabitha Soper in The Rotting Leaf
"Eco-fiction for me is the deepest expression of this moral imperative–to present the natural world, this thing that has been cast as something so alien to us, as something worthy of empathy."
