This has always been my problem with the future of self-driving cars too, and of course several people have argued with me that I’m stupid. I don’t trust any corporations now and I don’t trust that the government will always be benevolent - if you’re in the US, it already isn’t, at least mine is still fairly sensible, but that could change easily too. One of the biggest problems is that self-driving cars either are, or one day will be safer than human drivers. Which of course is a great thing! But then there will be a push to ban manual driving. First we’ll get I, robot, where manual driving is frowned upon. It’ll happen step by step. Also: a fast means of transport for me and my family that doesn’t stop working when comms go down and isn’t restricted to a specific route, is what keeps me feeling much safer living <200 km from the Russian border. Buses or trains need to wait till they get enough people on. Self-driving cars likely won’t go anywhere. Bicycles and feet are great for day to day life in a livable city, but they don’t let me cross 4 national borders in 16 hours.

I’ll just copy-paste the first paragraph in case you or anyone else can’t open it: The English Wikipedia has decided to stop using archive.today and its related websites. This decision was agreed on after a request for comment with more than 200 participants concluded in February 2026, and is due to multiple concerns, including the site using editors’ and readers’ computers to run a denial-of-service attack and evidence that the website has tampered with some archived pages. And the story on the DoS script itself: gyrovague.com/…/archive-today-is-directing-a-ddos…

like MapQuest did. MapQuest didn’t really do anything, it uses OpenStreetMaps which is a community effort and doesn’t have localized place names the way Google and Apple maps do. E.g country names for me in google maps aren’t their local names, nor the GNIS names you’d see in the US, they’re names in my own language. There’s literally no “United States” on the map, only “Ameerika Ühendriigid” for me. There’s a large degree of automation there for them to do this in I’m assuming 100+ languages for anything they can (i.e country names and large bodies of water as well as many cities are in Estonian for me, but most other places are just global defaults). Once you start adding manual overrides, shit like this gets way too difficult to manage for little reason.

Monster for staying married after already having kids or monster for marrying? The Vance of the early-mid 2010s was very different before the Thiel money kicked in. He compared Trump to Hitler. He was very easily bought though.

Estonians found a way to communicate without sex, future, articles or prepositions. Oh, sounds like a super easy language to learn with fewer things in it, right? Fuck you, we have 14 cases so we could tell foreigners from native speakers by how they confuse genitive and partitive, two of the most basic cases. And then most cities, towns, villages you’d go to use illative (“into”) to say “I’m going to X”, but some will be allative (“onto”) and there’s no rule for it, so people from other parts of the country might not know it and it’ll sound super weird. And I still find English to be the weird language. Just look at the different words written as “lead”. Why are they pronounced so differently?! Nothing is pronounced as written.

I assume you mean EVs with heat pumps? I don’t know of any ICE vehicles that do this, seems inefficient to waste mechanical or electrical energy when you have perfectly good waste heat to use upon reaching operating temperature (though you may need to use an aux heater before reaching that, particularly on diesels)

Tech Bros want you to install it because DHH is a fellow tech bro and a millionaire 90% of Lemmy hates it because of DHH’s post about how he used to idolize London as a kid but now stays the fuck away because not enough white people. What makes it special is that it comes preinstalled with hyprland so you don’t have to pacman it. What makes hyprland special is that it’s a tiling wm for wayland made by someone who, judging by their behaviour on discord and github, is 13 years old. You can just install it on Arch. You also get it as an option in the installer for CachyOS, meaning you can get it preinstalled on Arch without using Omarchy. Also you can just use Sway, which is also a tiling wm for Wayland. Less eye candy, but probably more stable and less likely to have significant security issues.

Multiple groups can be blamed. The DNC deserves more blame than anyone who refused to vote, but all the people saying “if you vote for Kamala, you love genocide” deserve some blame too, because anyone with a brain knew that a lot more people were going to get hurt under Trump. Wonder who they’ll run in 2028. If there’s an election in 2028.

It was fun to figure out what serpentine belt I needed. I’ve been sold the wrong serpentine belt once or twice from an in-person store, never from an online catalogue though. I cross-reference the OEM parts catalogue and if necessary, images of the part being replaced to the factory repair manual. 99% of the time, parts by VIN are accurate in the OE catalogue, but occasionally someone has retrofitted some newer or older part in a pinch, in which case the parts store guy is just about useless anyway. E.g my car doesn’t have the sump drain plug it should, meaning someone has changed the oil pan for a slightly older one. My engine was in production from 2003 through 2008 in that exact configuration and mine’s a 2007, so a few things had already been revised in that time (the engine got a bigger update in 2008, at which point it got a new engine code)

I’m also confused as to how Rogaine is gender-affirming for men. Most manly thing you can be is balding because that means high testosterone. Which is not to say I don’t think cis people can get gender-affirming care. I just don’t see how having hair affirms being male. Maybe if you used Rogaine to grow chest hair?

Of all the appliances that could be “smart”, I find the fridge the least exciting. My heat pump has Wi-Fi. Cool, I can turn it on remotely so it starts heating or cooling my home. Washing machine that tells you it’s finished and reports the ETA in the meantime - not an entirely unwanted feature, since the same program could take 1 hour or 5 depending on how much laundry I put in. Mine doesn’t have it and I don’t NEED it, but if I’m ever in the market again and two equivalent washing machines from a reputable brand (MAYBE I’d trust Miele. Definitely not Samsung, LG, most others) were priced roughly the same, I’d buy the one with it. I just can’t think of a world where a smart fridge would work better for me than my dumb one though. I paid a bit extra to get one that had a better efficiency rating and a nearly silent compressor and that’s it. The only things I would find to be “upgrades” over this would be if it was a larger SBS one that made ice, but I decided not to triple the budget from ~600 to ~2000.

There are several different problems here and banning Chinese cars is possibly the worst solution. And with Trump and magats in charge, a better solution is off the table anyway. Problem 1: American automakers don’t make anything good and it’s all expensive. Problem 2: Americans need jobs, everyone buying their (second) most expensive belonging from abroad transfers manufacturing jobs abroad. Problem 3: EV transition in the US isn’t going as strong as it should be. Problem 4: China has EV subsidies for cars sold to other countries. This allows for dumping stock at below cost prices, after already having super low production costs (among other things China is the world’s battery manufacturer, Chinese EVs get batteries for much cheaper; also Chinese labor costs are at most a quarter of union labor in the US). Usually EV subsidies, if they exist, are on purchasing, not production. The solution, to me, isn’t banning Chinese EVs. It’s a further increase of tariffs on cars made in China and then that tariff money should be used to fund an EV purchase subsidy so that all EVs get cheaper for the end user to buy (yes, said subsidies would also apply to Chinese EVs). Now if BYD or whoever wants to sell a ton of cars in the US, they have to manufacture in the US, which means they have similar costs to other manufacturers (minus the batteries of course, nothing to do about that without causing a ton of issues. You can’t just increase tariffs on Chinese batteries because non-Chinese manufacturers need them too). My proposed solution would directly affect #2 and #4 in a positive manner, be better for #3 than outright banning Chinese EVs, but not as good as simply allowing them to dump nearly-free cars on Americans (which would of course increase in price once the competition is dead) and forces the American automakers themselves to sort out #1 because right now much of their competition is the German big 3 and Toyota, all of which are expensive too (shit, I consider Toyota more expensive than the Germans because I look at used cars, I love depreciation) But what do I know, I’m not American and don’t know shit about economics and trade wars and don’t even own an EV.

ml and hexbear folks are now going to be crawling out of the woodwork to remind everyone on a somewhat left-leaning platform not to vote. Because they LOVE it when republicans win. I’m not even American, but I keep saying this: If the far right stands a good chance of winning, then leading up to the election, shut the fuck up and hold your nose and vote for the candidate that’s not pedohitler (okay, this time around it’s midterms not presidential, but the point stands). Spend the rest of the time doing whatever you can to actually change things, though.

Nah I think moving closer to work is actually a solution. Unless your job could happen remotely, in which case it’s a band-aid for a solution the company is refusing to provide. And uh, cooking at home should be the default anyway? Is it not for some people? The price difference is so big, it’s never made sense to see eating outside or ordering delivery as anything other than a treat to yourself.

The translation feature has been very useful, though it’s not an LLM. Still a neural network though. Saves me from going to google translate when browsing websites in e.g Russian (drive2.ru or whatever turns up in google search every so often when looking up obscure information on some cars and european oils that bitog forums don’t see as much). It entirely depends on what the AI does and if it’s opt-in, opt-out, or forced on you. Opt-in local AI with sensible features is actually a good thing IMO.

Well the part of the article that quotes the actual job listing: Part of that role, compensated at between $180,000 and $230,000, will be to “identify, assess, track, and investigate global threats including geopolitical instability, terrorism, crime, activism, nation-state targeting of the AI sector, and emerging security trends, including deep-dive research and OSINT collection on specific threats, actors, and events” (emphasis added). But yeah, not a good look especially if you consider who decides what “terrorism” and “crime” mean in the US right now. And now for a tangent I wrote that you can just skip if you’re not interested: The part about specifically tracking AI activists was that they watch for anti-AI protests anywhere where their executives go so they know to stay out of the way, but… How do they not realize that they’ve brought this upon themselves? Market AI as “doing everyone’s job” and “super dangerous” and of course people will be pissed at you. Dario himself is the one constantly parroting how the next Claude model is so dangerous it needs to be kept in adamantium chains and whatnot. Like your industry is already pissing people off with the data centers and the cost of computer parts, why you gotta tell everyone you’re working to put us all out of jobs? Jfc I’m a software engineer with no marketing or PR experience and I think even I could do better PR than all these companies supposedly worth billions. If OpenAI is already farming outrage, just position yourself as the more responsible alternative and you’ll still get sales without your execs needing to fear for your lives… Occasionally release a smaller, less capable version of Claude as open weight to win mindshare among developers, the people actually burning tons of tokens right now. Like Alibaba does with Qwen, just don’t release the full size model like Alibaba does if you’re afraid people are going to run it in competition with you.

Not necessarily. The most extreme example being the Central Park Tower penthouse which is 3 stories. But in terms of ones that don’t cost 250 million, even pretty small ones can have lofts, and there are multi-level ones that don’t actually span the entirety of any of the stories they’re on and end up being normal sized for a single family.

But AMD had almost always pretty great midrange offerings which most consumer buy anyway. Especially in the last three generation they had their shit together and were IMHO pretty competitive in every price bracket besides the very high end. Still, they lost even more market share. In the US maybe. Any time I looked at AMD cards in recent years, they were more expensive than nVidia equivalents. And that was even before Lisa Su started courting Donald Trump and the AI industry. There’s a cult following around AMD and they and retailers both abuse that.

Just by googling the electricity prices in California, I’d venture a guess and say yes. Unless it’s particularly expensive to install there. Here where I live, in Estonia, electricity is about a third to a half of the price of California if you get a fixed plan, or it gets super expensive in the winter when solar is useless, and super cheap (sometimes free energy, but grid fee still applies) in the summer when solar output is awesome thanks to the super long days, if you don’t have a fixed plan. Installing solar panels without hefty batteries wouldn’t pay off in 2026 (the only real benefit is on a fixed plan in the summer so you don’t have to use grid power at all). In comparison, California has way less seasonal variability in production and as I understand it, less seasonal variability in demand too (our heating systems haul ASS in the winter, our record peak power consumption happened Feb 5th of this year).

It’s the Zionists and their money. Conspiracy theorists were right all along unfortunately, with Israel doing everything possible to validate them. But in an election once the candidates are locked between “We’ll give money to the Israelis and they’ll kill Palestinians” and “We’ll give money to the Israelis and they’ll kill Palestinians, but also we want to get rid of Latinos and LGBTQ people, also poor people should lose the little healthcare they do have and hey there’s probably more bullshit we’re gonna pull, but some of it’s so stupid we haven’t even thought of it yet” I can’t see how anyone with a brain would not vote against #2. Donald Trump won completely legitimately and in addition to the 77.3 million Trump voters, there are about 90 million other eligible voters to blame for the kidnapping of Maduro, the war in Iran, the stupid ass tariffs, and so many other things. That’s what they all were willing to accept.

Yeah, so the terminology used by the US right-wing media is so fucked that essentially liberal=communist= anyone to the left of Reagan, but ALSO, for fearmongering purposes, they’re all actually super left-wing extremists. The only part of it that has taken hold outside of conservative bullshit circles is that the word “liberal” no longer means someone who loves the free market and now has more to do with social justice and even supporting universal healthcare is a “liberal” thing in the US because the socialism word is evil or whatever. Parts of it have carried over to some EU countries too because at least here in Estonia, the far right looks to Trump and Fox News for their talking points these days (weird in a country with <30% religious people) and our liberals (actual liberals, the kind who want to cut services and reduce taxation) have been called socialists lmao
