PS1 has a 30 MIPS CPU but a dedicated matrix math coprocessor running at 66 MIPS and a motion decoder coprocessor running at 80 MIPS that complicate direct comparisons. There's also the GPU and SPU, all of which the emulator is doing in software.

@djsumdog@djsumdog.com @pretendo@mastodon.pretendo.network @bot@seal.cafe @coolboymew@shitposter.club idk if ePSXe ever reached the level of optimization Bleem! and Connectix VGS did, but as stronger PC hardware came out it no longer mattered and compat became king (pretty sure Mednafen and Duckstation are nowhere near as performant as ePSXe either because of the accuracy focus)

@djsumdog@djsumdog.com @jon@mastodon.pretendo.network @pretendo@mastodon.pretendo.network @bot@seal.cafe To clarify, Connectix and bleem! were separate lawsuits from Sony against two competing emulators. Sony won NONE of the lawsuits but managed to interfere with both companies’ sales enough through both temporary injunctions and threatening retailers that bleem! went bankrupt and Connectix lost enough money to consider selling VGS to Sony and walk away from that business. The bleem! suits involved various other complaints like use of screenshots in advertising (ruled fair use for “comparative advertising”) and patent infringement via use of the Playstation BIOS - sound familiar to the Yuzu situation? The Connectix case is particularly good because the court ruled that you don’t even need to cleanroom a console BIOS, you are allowed to have the same developers disassemble and analyze it as the ones re-implementing it!

@coolboymew@shitposter.club @djsumdog@djsumdog.com @pretendo@mastodon.pretendo.network @bot@seal.cafe Connectix VGS can run certain PS1 games at full speed on hardware slightly weaker than a PS1. The 1 game thing with Bleem! was just for their Dreamcast version, the PC release was general. Full library compat is hard because you don't know about obscure API calls until you encounter games that use them, or weird edge cases until you see games that rely on them.
