Hello. This is my nth attempt at staying on #Mastodon, after leaving Meta, X, and related noise. I work around (dual-use) #technology and #ethics, mostly from my hometown, #Barcelona, and sometimes from the Italian Alps (a long love story). I don’t have a clear plan for what to do here. Maybe existing, slowly, is already doing something. Perhaps I’ll post occasionally — or not; who knows. I might leave again after a while. I love #philosophy, sacred places, reading both digital and paper #books, and listening to #music — all day long. Somewhere in between, a #catcow walks across the keyboard and takes partial control :blobcatthisisfine: My mother tongue is #Catalan — English, Spanish, and Italian also happen here. Time zone: CET. If that resonates, welcome. P. S. Much of this is typed on a neo-vintage phone, complete with a physical keyboard — for reasons. ... Només un vianant. #introduction

I keep insisting that Tuesdays are strange — like the entire month of February.

@Lupposofi@mementomori.social Hi! Thanks for sharing this thread, even at a quick glance it’s clear it’s been carefully developed. I’m familiar with the paper you’re starting from, it’s genuinely strong and very timely. Cognitive warfare isn’t just a threat to epistemic security and cognitive integrity, it’s also a strategic interest aimed at shaping opinion and creating vulnerabilities in narratives, ultimately where values are articulated and societies take form. This is especially relevant around democracy itself, where, as you know, the very notion of knowledge carries a particular meaning. I’m looking forward to reading from you more and staying in touch. And don’t worry about Finnish, language isn’t really a barrier to communication anymore.

@Lupposofi I agree that reducing the problem to FIMI would be conceptually insufficient. Information manipulation is multivectorial and does not respect borders. That said, the report in question is a strategic policy document with a clearly delimited object. It examines a specific vector of interference within the transatlantic security framework. Asking it to address the theory of democracy in degrees or the internal pathologies of liberal systems would be asking it to do a different job. In my view, it can and should be complemented with more structural analyses, from IPCC style governance proposals to critiques of the regulatory design of the AI Act, but that does not invalidate its focus. If we broaden the framework toward technology and defense, works such as AI, Automation, and War by Anthony King are particularly useful, and if we seek a deeper normative grounding, Hans Jonas’s principle of responsibility remains indispensable. And yes, the Stanford entry on Attention is excellent. But, for instance, the one on Abduction is clearly biased in its framing. Even authoritative reference works are not immune to interpretive tilt. The issue is not whether a text is more than ten pages long. Gettier’s famous cases against the tripartite account of knowledge, justified true belief, run barely three pages and reshaped contemporary epistemology. Nor is it simply the declared intention of a document. The enduring controversy over the purpose of The Prince makes that clear. I do agree with your diagnosis regarding the erosion of critical spirit and the pervasive dynamics of manipulation. And your remark about tools that use us touches on a deeper paradox I have been reflecting on for some time. Even intellectuals and otherwise sensible people often articulate the risks clearly, yet continue to operate within and depend on the very platforms and technological infrastructures they critique. That tension is difficult to resolve and may well be structurally embedded. Thank you as well for maintaining this level of conversation. It is genuinely stimulating.

What strikes me is how cognitive warfare is becoming something more than “just propaganda”. This feels different. More personal. More precise. Not only about misleading us, but about wearing us down — cultivating ignorance, fatigue, and passivity in the face of rights, injustice, and responsibility. This report helped me put words to that shift. #cognitivewarfare #weaponizingAI #digitalethics #ethics #digitalrights #democracyhttps://www.kas.de/en/web/canada/event-reports/detail/-/content/new-publication-wired-for-war-how-authoritarian-states-are-weaponizing-ai-against-the-west-with-migs-1
