Vanity has no antecedent. Make stuff. Write things. Share them. Get less dumb. aka Chris Dent. They.

I used to be in the software development field but I gave it up. I now do some combination of climbing things, making stuff in clay, swanning about, and being frequently disappointed.

RE: @FND@hachyderm.io

I've been working on a website for the clay stuff I've been making (to be revealed soon when I have taken the right photos). In version one it was just HTML and CSS. If you wanted to contact me you'd have to use email (by golly!). In version two I relented and added a very simple form.

It seems to work well enough. It's not going to drive massive engagement nor make me rich. It's not supposed to. Nor will it track you or treat you as the product.

All these things are related. And our lack of judgement (as professionals) has made so many things terrible.

Working on software that is just-for-me really enforces just how soul-sucking working on enterprise software was for me.

If making software is so freakin' easy that an optimistic linear algebra box can do it, surely every enterprise ought to be making their own custom-to-them (as in "just-for-me") software.

I've written a bit of code recently, for some web pages that have a bit of interaction. Some Python. Some Go. I've not enjoyed it.

♩I've lost that lovin' feelin' ♩

Replying to
@mattb your “#kubernetes” is a fine tonal summary of my experience. It feels wrapped in sighs.

In absolutely no surprise to anyone who has tried it: it is not getting any easier to run your own mail server and actually send and receive the right mail.

OH: "insufficient feedback is the bane of our existence"

One of the truer truisms that ever did true.

I’ve had an unfortunate OS upgrade experience today. Not one I was surprised by, but still disappointing.

Some Perl code I wrote in 2001 continues to work well through many upgrades with very few changes.

Meanwhile Python code I wrote in 2014 has required major massaging over the years to keep alive and today I don’t have energy to do another round of endless fiddling so I’m going to let it sit, broken, at least for a bit.

Perl and Python aren’t really the main characters in this story, in case you feel compelled to comment on that aspect.

I’ve been watching Half Man on the BBC. It has not been pleasant. It’s very well made. Hits hard in many hidden places.
